Advice on scoping Crabs in Mandurah

Taking the kids for a run on the weekend but it has been over a decade since I last venture down there scooping so would not know where to start. Advice would be much appreciated.

Are you going to be boat based or just wading?

Depends on the age of the kids

It is pretty good scooping anywhere in the Eastuary but some areas are muddy, for example the stretch between Dawesville and Parkridge ramp. Not to say you dont get any, just not as pleasant.

Areas I personally like is infront of the Road leading to Nairns or even Coodanup foreshore. Another is Novara foreshore Reserve north off the boat ramp. My all time favourite place from shore is Island Point at the southern end. Vast areas of flats there with some bigun usually. PM me with more details if you like, and whether you have a boat as I have some great spots from boat.

Cheers

I’ve been doing very well on

Thu, 2015-01-22 09:30

I’ve been doing very well on the sand flats, weed patches on the Coodanup foreshore closer to the Serpentine channel. I’ve been using an electric motor on my dinghy to spot them and then following them until they wanna fight and jumping out and scooping them. Lots of big males but make sure you wear good footwear because there are a LOT under the sand and will nip your foot/ankle/calf. I got tagged through my (very thin) booties and on my bare calf and it bloody hurt.

I’ve found that mid to late morning is best and once you start stirring them up you will see more and more and sometimes you’ll chase one only to see another 3 pop up and skittle away leaving you to decide which one is biggest and if you are good enough you can scoop 2-3 crabs at once. Generally I’ll work the ground where the waders have just walked through or stir up the sand (up current from the waders of course) with the outboard and loop back around with the leccy motor. I saw a couple of blokes the other day walking around until they stood on one and then pinning it down with their foot and scooping them up and Dad was walking around prodding the sand with the scoop until one attached the wire and then scooping them up.

 I tried scooping at navara

Thu, 2015-01-22 12:32

I tried scooping at navara on Saturday for 2 hours and got 3 crabs. closer to parkridge boat ramp is better and if you can get across to the other side of the ramp it is even better still.

I went down to Herron Point

Thu, 2015-01-22 17:54

I went down to Herron Point last Friday evening.  Bagged out on big blues in 40 mins between 8.00pm and 8.40pm. Just waded out north of the car park.
