Albany Fishing
Submitted by Dreamweaver on Sat, 2009-01-24 17:48
Spent a lovelly few hours catching up with Vince (Uncutrigger) and his lovelly Wife Wendy this afternoon, where a few beers where forced down Vince and I's throat by our wives, despite our prodestations . Followed by a very civilised cheese, meat and condiment platter. Yum!
Vince, Sandra and I are heading out tomorrow morning. Hopefully, conditions will be right to head out WIDE and hook into some decent Pinkies and even that ellusive Southern Ocean Dhui! . I've been given some serious intel .
Conditions are forcast as good - here's hoping!

Good Luck
Have to agree; Pre Brags are a dangerous concept. I'm hoping that you do well though. Let's see some cracka fish/photos from you tomorrow night.
Three days without it and I get a little jumpy
The best reason for doing what's right today is tomorrow.

OK! The Report LOL!
First up, you guys were right...almost on but not on two counts.
1) I (we - that's me and Vince) din't think it was a full on brag ,
2) Whilst we din't get what we wanted, we did GET .
OK, NOW THE REPORT
During a few beviews yesterday afternoon, we agreed that we'd aim for a 06:30am launch at Emu Point.
After fuelling the boat, and purchasing the bait nearby, Sandra and I arrived at the ramp at 06:25. To be met by a Fishwrecked adorned fellow, looking miraculously like Vince , and his lovelly wife Wendy.
Unbenown to us, someone had organised a boat fishing comp, so the madness that is Albany on a long weekend, was multiplied by 5 fold. PLUS! Just to make it interesting, Sandra's DPI MATE Tony had decided to pop down and do boat checks (safety gear etc). PLUS SOME IDIOT had tied his boat off on one side of one finger (two side) launcha facility. &^$%^^#@!!!!
Anyway, amongst a constant drizzle, we headed out, about 15 NM south of bald head towards the shelf.
OK, THE 10KG SNAPPER DIDN'T HAPPEN - GET OVER IT!!!
We DID manage to hook into a few fish, the first was a Scorpy by Sandra at 08:40. Followed by vince with a Leathery at 08:45:
5 minutes later, my 330 screamed off and I called it for what it was a Sambo coming in at just under 20Kg:
My next drop resulted in a Blue Morwong at 6Kg:
Accompanied by a rather unsual catch at 80m plus, Vince's slimey mackeral! Go figure !
Things went quiet for a while, then Vince hooked into quite a brute of a Sambo - 25Kg - and the bugger rused to go down. We finally saw him off safely to the bottom:
Just after 12:00, Sandra landed another LJ for the esky and Vince, not to be outdone landed a nice 4.5Kg Morwong:
Other than a few banded sweep, things went quiet, as we gradually worked our way North back closer to the coast.
The Molly Hawks and Albatoros were a pain! You'd think that we were the only boat out. At one stage I counted 30 Mollys and 4 Albys - with the Albys chasing a line prepared for a drop as much as the Molly's.
At this stage you could add 2 Molly Hawks to my catch list - bloody pests LOL - don't worry, both were safely released!
The hilight of the afternnon was Vince's fights with a caught Moray. With the pacience of a surgeon, Vince, at great risk, managed to untangle his line from the coiling bitey and rescue both his Sinker and Hook!
Even with it's body cut off, Vince made the mistake of putting his finger too close to the mouth:
The seas roughened up around 14:00, so we slowly headed back and pulled the boat out at around 15:30.
Despite the less than forcast catch, it was a great day and wonderful to have a Fishwrecked colleague on board.
Enjoyed your company immensely today Vince - and same goes for BOTH you and your lovelly wife yesterday (and briefly before we all left the ramp).
A pleasure absolutely!
We'll definately take up your offer of coming up to Perth and staying with you mate!

well done guys and girl,
well done guys and girl, sounds like you had a great day on the water ,but that typical albany weather its rain or wind and quite often both, at least you got out not like most of us perthites
Vince, one thing you learnt is never trust a bitey thing at any stage they still get there revenge and those fangs they have can mangle anything
Colin, what was the count? did sandra outfish you yet again or shoud i say as usual
good to see the trains were both released to bust up someone elses gear another day

All up it was:
Sandra
1 Scorpy (released)
1 Leathery (released)
1 Banded sweep (realeased)
1 Breaksea
1 Mutton Bird (released)
Vince
1 Sambo (released)
1 Moray Eel
1 Banded Sweep (released)
1 Breasea (released)
1 Scorpy (released)
2 Morwong
1 Slimy Mackeral
Colin
1 Sambo (released)
1 Blue Morwong
1 Swallow tail (released)
1 Mutton Bird (released)
So, you decide . In terms of numbers caught, Vince is the winner , followed by Sandra. Biggest fish (returned) was Vince's Sambo. Biggest fish (kept) was my Morwong.
EDIT! Forgot to add the stupid mutton birds

Morey Eel!
The morey looks like it was a bit of a handfull col.
Funny thing about the slimey mackerel..i caught one in about 70 mtres off albany a of months ago.Would be a good bait for a big tuna or something..
Those mutton birds are the cheekiest birds on the planet i reckon..swimming down and grabbing the baits as your trying to drop..sometimes i dont feel like releasing them when i get a hold of one.(but always do)
We went out from two poeples again on sat and found it pretty quiet..with only two reasonble queens and a blackbum.Spent most of the day searching for new ground though.
Looks like you had a good day on the water though..some nice fish there.
cheers

Cheers mate!
Yeah, those mutton birds sure ARE a bloody pest. Yesterday was by far the worst. Mind you, it was macarbre fun throwing out a mulie and watch the melee - especially when four albatross joined the fray.
I had a chance to test that (whale/tuna oil) slick approach. It definately works. Unfortunately, try as I may, I could not get it to surround the boat.
As for the moray, yeah - we give them a VERY wide (hand) berth - for good reason LOL.
Suprised 2peeps was quiet - lucky you mate - always good to find new ground.

Thanks for the great time Colin and Sandra.
Just not long in after negotiating lunatics on the road back to Perth. Massive week away for me with work in Esperance and Albany capped off by some great company and good weather in Albany and Mt Barker.
If some of you are worried about the comfort lift I apolagise. The fish did survive. If you take a look in the Sunday Times fishing pages I am not sure that comfort lift worked. I wonder how the girls intended cooking that horse?
I am now very well educated in the art of taking hooks off Morays and how NOT to do it. LOL. Don't worry Colin and Sandra, my wife is a registered nurse and I still have to apply my own emergency dressings... LOL
Many thanks for such a great couple of days. For those of you who are genuine about meeting good people, stop thinking about it and do it. That is what I consider this site to be about. If you do however, take some time out to learn about them and don't pre-judge. Colin, Sandra, Wendy and I will spend more time together and hopefully provide some equally humourous reports.
Cheers, Vince

Sunday Times Sambo
Yeah, saw that one Vince. They did say they wouldn't keep another if they caught one. Probably just stoked to catch something of that size.
Sounds like you guys had a good session. Well done guys!
If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate.

You're welcome Vince
Sorry you had to face the lunatics back home (we see a microcosm of that everday driving to and back from Albany ).
It was a pleasure to have you and Wendy down on Sat afternoon and go out with you yesterday.
Like I've always said, work, time and other circumstances willing, Sandra and I are always willing to share time (and our boat if the weather is right) with fellow fishwrecked members.
