ALBANY OFFSHORE 24/8
Went down to Albany on the weekend with the weather looking good i was keen to get out on Blueback charters again as i,ve had a great time previosely with them.We headed out with the ocean looking glassy at 7am.On the way out Bill the Deckie told us stories of the old days when he could carry his 22 rifle round on his back and ride around town without anyone blinking a eye..Gold.Im sure hes over 70 and still a stoked as a someone half is age to be out there fishing and sharing his years of knowledge with you.Gotta watch him though cause he'll outfish you with his alvey loaded with 80lb mono...Ok got to our first spot around the 70mtre mark at 8.30.First drop got a double header of Reds..Good Start, but after that the fish were playing a little hard to get.Jason the skipper worked hard all day to put us on the fish but they just did'nt seem hungry today.Second drift pulled up a slimy mackerel...interesting catch in 70m.Caught a couple more Reds and my mate mark caught a pretty solid skippy and a queenie.Everyone on board got into the action eventually with a few big bustoffs and a big sambo coming on board..I sent him back down on the release weight so i hope he survived. No du's or any real trophy fish but a fun day with blueback boys and are a great charter to head out on as they pretty much have a max of 11 people on board which makes the chances of hooking a good fish a bit better.

Chrisp - welcome to my fishing ground (I'm in Barker, but fish out of Albany).
Looks like you got a fair haul mate with plenty of reds! As you say, that mackerel is an interesting catch from 70m and that skippy is a real cracker!
The Sambos have been pretty active down here, with the young ones catching some stonkers even off the stones.
The pinks have all but shut down with local boaties that normally do very well (in their 'spots') reporting things as very quiet. However, still quite a bit of action from Blue Morwong.
I would have loved to have been able to get out last weekend. Good (low) winds promised this weekend but the swell is right up!

Albany
G'day Colin,
Thanks for the feedback..I've got rellies in Albany and lived there for about 18months but had to leave due to work commitments but i still get Down every couple of months to take advantage of the wide variety of fishing down there.Noticed a nice boat for sale in Barker yesterday 6mtre sportsfisher..If only i had a spare 49 grand lying round.
It was a white day on the Alamanac on the weekend and the fishing was a little slow by Albany standards..but is looking better this weekend..Like you say it's just a matter of getting the weather right down there. As long as the swell and wind are resonable im out there!

Yeah Chrisp
Hmmm, don't know who's selling that - will have to take a drive!
Yeah, things do seem to slow down a bit at this time of year, which is a shame because there's been some good weather. Shame you didn't get into any dhuis - apparently they are out in pretty deep water. Yet to pull one out myself down here - one day!
As you've probably seen, you really do have to pick your days - the southern ocean isn't very forgiving.

True Chrisp!
I agree, skippy of the size shon go hard on light gear for sure. But, if you were using light stuff and hooked into a decent Morwong or Sambo, you'd get buried BIG time!
Did you go out from Emu point?

I Know!
Plus most charters seem to shudder when i pull out the light tackle..worried about the fish walking me around the boat.Thats prob the only bad thing about charters really. You Don't get to be too sporting.Like you say if you hook a big morwong or ever worse sambo...then its game on..
We went out from the town jetty..

Ah yes, from Princess harbour. It's Blue water that leaves from Emu Point. As you said, with charters and so many lines in the water, even on a drift, light lines may cause issues, let alone with fish on. Then there's braid vs mono to consider and first time fishos getting used to gear (not that I'm bagging them because we all start somewhere).
Still, a great opportunity to go out if you don't have a decent boat.
What was there gear like - all basic level wind stuff was it?

GEAR
Yeah mate,
They just use the good old reliable alvey with 80lb mono and 15-24kg rods.Thats why i always bring my own gear....also gets u prime spot at the back of the boat...he he .every time the bill deckie sees me his like...u boys got braid?Go to the back...

Alveys
I guess they go for the Kiss principle - an Alvey in deep water would be hard work - and probably mono to make it easier to undo tangles. Pays to take your own with braid for many reasons ay?
