Am I having a winge for nothing? re: purchase of new outboard (not fishing related)
Now the bans on I thought I would post up a situation ive had recently and tell me if im carrying on about nothing or if u think it is an issue (don't be too brutal though! ha ha). Went to my local Yamaha dealer (not Chivers marine, our site sponsor) to buy a brand new (brand new is the key word here!) 250 Yamaha 4 st to re-power a boat im doing up pretty much from scratch ie everything replaced brand new from nuts/bolts, paint to electronics to seats - everything, only original thing is hull. I go in to dealership, sales rep busy so I wander around and happen to see a 2019 250hp 4st Yamaha on the back of a new boat, display boat in showroom. I get hold of sales rep tell him what I want and we go into office to do paperwork and give deposit. First thing I say is I want a 2020 model delivered and put on my boat straight out of the crate, he tells me not possible to get a 2020 model yet, can only get a 2019 (I find that hard to believe - its nearly the end of 2020) he goes on to tell me that when he bought a new motor it was from the year before as well that's just how it is. I say ok but I want a new one straight out of crate onto my boat and im in no hurry coz my boat wont be ready till just after Christmas im guessing - he says no problem. Paperwork done, payment done - I go feeling very pleased. A few days later I was thinking id get them to put a fuel/water separator on for me when they fit up the motor. I call him to organise it and he says no problem you can even bring your boat in right now if you want coz you can have the motor that's on the back of the display boat. I actually laughed, I honestly thought he was joking, long pause on his end then he says yeh only have to undo the two bolts holding it on and its your. I saw red at first, took a breathe and said I don't want that motor coz I didn't order it and you agreed I'd get one straight out of crate and put on my boat. He said it did come straight out of a crate and was put on boat as display about 2 months ago and never been started. Im whinging for the below reasons:
1) I still don't believe that it is not possible to get a 2020 model at this time of year
2) In hindsight I never had a chance at getting a 2020 model coz he was never gonna order one
3) He had obviously decided I was having the one in the showroom at the time of the deal and didn't tell me (that really fuckn pissed me off)
4) He says motor put on display boat 2 months ago and never been started - i pretty much don't believe a word he says by now
OK that's my whinge over, If you spent 30 odd grand on a new motor, and the above happened to you what would you think about it. Am i whinging for nothing?
Cheers Dave

If you are still getting a
If you are still getting a new motor out of the crate like agreed on, then no harm done and I’d have asked him how many thousand he wanted to take off for taking the display motor to make a point... who knows, you might get a ripper deal.

Your loot, your rules.
I'd be going off like the guns of Navarone on this one. If you stated you wanted to see it come out of the cardboard coffin then so be it. You didn't go in and ask for a display donk you asked for a motor to come out of a box before your eyes. I wouldn't be too worried about the manufacture year as the warranty is from the day you purchase it.

Like you have stated in your
Like you have stated in your story, he never had any intention of ordering a motor for you, you were always going to get the display one. Probably so then he can use your money to get a current year model one for his new display.

2020 or 2019 model you still
2020 or 2019 model you still got a brand new motor with 0 hours on it.
unlike cars I don't believe outboard resales are greatly impacted by year more so hours on it.
if you have repowered it I am safe to assume you plan to hang on to it for several years so again whether it's 19/20 model is really irrelevant, end of the day you have a brand new outboard that's good for 3000+ hours if you look after it, enjoy the many years of happy reliable boating ahead of you. I would let it go and move past it.
thats just my opinion of course, I repowered in 2018 with a new yammy, to be honest I didn't even check to make sure I got a 2018, all I know is it was brand new with 0 hours and I couldn't care less if I were to find out it's actually a 2017, I've already put 400 hours on it without a trouble and I love it.
in saying all that, if you specifically asked for a 2020 and you got a 2019 then I am sure you would have a strong case if you spoke to consumer protection.

That’s what you
Want and agreed on . I would be pissed also. I don’t trust some dealers ( not all of them) . Good mate of mine got sounder of local dealer paid for new one and fitting . Gets it home takes cover of ( scratches on screen) wtf . Went back there straight away . Display one not there gone . Guy who runs the store said oh sorry guys where suppose to fit new one not the display one . Yer right . As if he didn’t try pull one . Stick to what you agreed on .

Bad news
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I can tell you Yamaha Marine release the next years models 4-5 months prior to the end of the calender year. I.E. around July they start put the pressure on dealers to clear current years models. Demo will be on the dealers floor plan finance, he may need to clear that motor before they will give him another one.

Everyone has opinions
but what does the contract / purchase order / bill of sale / agreement say? I'd be surprised if no form of documentation was signed.

Yes I would be pissed. Money
Yes I would be pissed. Money refunded and go somewhere else. Get what you want it's your money. I think the date of the motor does have something to do with resale value, I would be aiming for a 2021 model if I was buying end of this year.

I feel your
I feel your frustration.
Push for what you want .....but maybe settle if,
A, Motor on display has Zero running hours
B, There's no new updates / mods to 2020 / 2021 that you specifically wanted.
Other wise no differance...A good inspection and handover on there fitting quality id guess being more of an issue.

outrageous
yeah mate i'd go absolutely wild about that and ask for a refund. Both the demo and the previous year model. Get your self the latest model possible so in 5 years time you dont have a 6yo motor. Can you please name the dealer or PM to me.

I'd be pissed off as you
I'd be pissed off as you clearly stipulated what you wanted. I'd go elsewhere with my money.
On the other hand it could be an opportunity to get a good deal. If not then find another dealer.

Yeah feel your pain you've
Yeah feel your pain you've been stung, I shop around real hard and kick lots of tyres before doing the deal now days.
Unfortunately these dealers have a chip on their shoulder that makes them feel like they are doing you a favour by selling you a product in reality they should be working to get your business.

For sure he wants to put a 2020 or 2021 model on the showroom boat it’s a great selling point otherwise very shortly he will be trying to sell a boat in 2021 with a 2019 outboard

Yep fuck em, the only way
Yep fuck em, the only way for these guys to lift their game is to be taught lessons along the way and that is a refund and you speaking your mind and going elsewhere...
I'd imagine like everything else during these strange times boat/motor sales have gone through the roof, I'm sure the dealer has been doing financially well but took you for a push over and wanted to get rid of the old model.
Is there even a way ( apart from hour meter on dash ) to tell if a motor has been running on the show room floor?

Talking Rubbish
I got 2 brand spanking new 2020 Yamaha 150hp 4 stroke outboards for my boat in July....3 months ago.
Be intersested to know where you got yours.....mine was Aquasports Marine. I have bought 2 boats (4.2 and 4.4m Renegades....by the way, these are great boats) and now bought 2 outboards from them....always been a good experience. I hope that wasn't where you got yours from
I know they were struggling with stock (like everyone), so I'd imagine a 2020 model would be on back order rather than in stock

I wouldnt be too happy spending that sort of money for a display model. The dealer sounds like he has lied to you all along.

Yamaha in WA
There is no way I would buy a Yamaha in WA, from all the bullshit I went through when trying to get replacement motors for Carnarvon sea rescue's boat through to faulty exhaust manifolds leaking water in through the exhaust valves. Had to go to head office over east, then have the head here in WA go crook at me for going over his head,
End of story, the group had to fork out over $30grand for new powerheads while another group was GIVEN a pair of brand new 350 hp outboard for nothing. And they wonder why sea rescue groups are turning to Suzukis
