anchor winch

im in the hunt for a new anchor winch to suit my streaker boat i now have a south pacific 700 free fall but i think its a piece of crap...... whats the best winch on the market these days wanna spend up to $2800 which includes rope chain and fitting.......azza

streaker, why dont you save the $2800 for a new mankini for exy 2010 and buy a retreival float for $125 , take abit of work but certainly beats yanking the anchor by hand , just ask my deckie

Also need to have a look at hatch setup and configuration, in particular the mounting plate.
Reckon we can get it done cheaper than you looking at also.

Stress Free
It is a drum winch and there are 3 sizes depending on how much room you have in your well. They are pretty powerful so i have a couple of beefed up batteries but the guy who makes them said most people dont bother. What I like about it is you dont need to cleat it off ie you can pay out the rope and then leave it loaded. It takes about guess 90 secs to retrieve from 50metres. Took a bit of getting used to ie feathering it as you bring up the last bit etc but have had it for 2 years now and most people on the boat comment on how good it is.

I have a lewmar profish which has free drop and which you can install yourself. the price is about $1400 online ,Great winch very powerful and bloody handy lol wife likes it even more than me

Got a Stress Free aswell thats easily the best whinch i have seen we use to have a capston winch on the crayboat was a heap of crap good for chain but no good on the rope use to slip and the drum winch keeps all the rope neat and tidy so there will be no knots

Winches
After a lot of research I have just fitted a Lewmar pro-fish 1000 to my 26' boat; havent had a chance to use it yet. The cost with rope and wire is about $2500 from All Boat Business.
A couple of things I learned while looking around is, dont buy the winch recommended for your boat size, go up one model. Most winches can only handly 10-12mm diameter rope - too skinny for my liking - maybe the breaking strain is ok but the abraision factor will reduce breaking strain pretty fast. I dont want to wake up half way to Madegascar coz the rope broke in the night. The Pro-fish 1000 takes 14mm rope.
If I could have fitted it in I would have fitted a Stressfree NG Mighty 1700. This winch takes 100m of 12mm rope with chain and is a free fall unit like the pro-fish. These Stressfree winches dont have a gypsy, they are basically a winch drum with an electric motor attached. They work very well but take up a lot of space.
In this instance, bigger is better; dont go small you will regret it.
