i have heard you should use
i have heard you should use about 2/3 of your boat length. but i think it depends on what grade of chain you are using. heavy chain a bit less light chain a bit more. i think your better off getting too much to start with , that way you wont need to join anywhere

as FF said, i recon around
as FF said, i recon around the length of your boat would be a good place to start, as far as i see it the longer the chain the better, the longer and the heavier the chain is the more horizonal the force will be and intern will insrease hold and mean there is less force on the anchor its self.

On my lewmar ive got 20
On my lewmar ive got 20 meters of chain and 100 meters of rope on a 5.6 ally never had a problem better of having to much chain then not enough i think not much fun when your anchor keeps letting go when the fish are on the go

Chain Gang
Ive got exactly the same set up on mine. Ive got 15m of chain on a 7.5 plate ally and it is more than enough. Would probably get away with half that. Had a squall come thru one night whilst staying at the Montes and spent 1/2 an hour getting the anchor out of the mud the next day - anchor was about 1mtr in the ground. Bit easier than trying to get the boat off the rocks though.....

for casual fishing a boat
for casual fishing a boat length plus a meter is good,
for hard core rough weather fishermen and overnight work ( ie you sleeping!) I'd go two to three times the boat length plus 3m as a rule of thumb.
Nothing beats chain for keeping an anchor set and firm in bad weather.

It would depend on your boat
It would depend on your boat and weight distribution really IMHO. But at least the length of your boat.
What boat have you got?

Too much chain just gets you
Too much chain just gets you tangles.
