another death at Salmon Holes, Albany

From the Albany Advertiser at 3:10 today:

Albany police have confirmed the death of a person at popular fishing spot Salmon Holes earlier today.

Officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Peter McLean did not reveal the gender of the deceased person and said police would continue making enquiries into the incident.

Albany Sea Rescue Squad and police retrieved the body and reached Emu Point boat harbour just before 3pm.

It is understood the victim was rock fishing and was swept off the rocks by a rogue wave at the notoriously dangerous fishing spot.

ABC Reported it was a 46 year old Perth Man.

Hopefully no one we know!!

Currently a 1.5m Swell and 10 knot breeze... forecast for the next few days goes up to a 4m swell and 35 knot winds

I was fishing at Albany at the time and almost went to the salmon holes. Glad I didn't its just too dangerous

even off the rocks at cheynes it's amazing how many people almost fell off the rocks tryin to get there salmon..

Its also bloody shocking to see people take more salmon then they're supposed to.. Defiantly made sure they knew

I can't see why you'd want

I can't see why you'd want more than your bag of dirty big salmon I must be missing something. Yes good bait but not for the average size freezer!

Sad

Mon, 2013-05-06 18:54

Was there last week and can understand just by looking at the rocks how dangerous it is. I fished the beach and found it quite safe as long as you keep an eye out on the swell.

Having said that thoughts go out to the family in this tragic time.

Cheers

tie off points at fishing spots

Mon, 2013-05-06 20:22

i was under the impression that these well known fishing spots had steel tie off points that you could fasten a rope to and thus prevent yourself from being swept of the rocks.

That is a real shit spot to

Mon, 2013-05-06 20:39

That is a real shit spot to fish!!! We have plenty of big sloping rocks down here and no-one fishes them...way too sketchy!! Why can't they just fish from the beach, heaps easier and safer...I'm sure they would still catch them.

Years ago

Fishing at salmon holes a few years ago saw a bloke ending up in the ocean. He was trying to lift the salmon up but he ended up trying to go down the slope to fetch it. Hit the slippery part of the rock and slid into the water. He was lucky that day had no swell and he was fishing the part near the beach. Had a few cuts from the barnacles. So lucky.

Channel

Mon, 2013-05-06 20:44

If I remember correctly there is a channel between the beach and a reef out front, where as if you head down to the right and fish from the sloping rocks ,you have clear water in front of you.
Its been many years since I fished there so if I'm wrong can someone correct me please.

Beach

Mon, 2013-05-06 20:56

Yep saw 15 or so landed from the beach in an hour and none from the rocks when I was there.

And yeah I am pretty sure they have tie off spots and an Epirb at each side. Just a shit situation and I still don't understand why you need to push the boundaries without taking every precaution but I guess some things happen and the sad part is someone won't be with their family tonight.

Hopefully this educates more that the south coast rockwalls and all rock fishing for that matter is dangerous and can't be taken lightly.

rock bolts

Tue, 2013-05-07 14:55

Mate of mine witnessed this guy going in and had to call rescue from the car park....

the conditions were ok

someone else jumped in to save him but was too late....he subsequently got rescued as well

another guy got stuck on the lower rocks last night and sea rescue had to pluck him off the rocks....non swimmer and wouldnt jump into the water to swim to the rescue boat.

wouldnt surprise me if DEC close the rocks for fishing until the bolts are installed.

There are no rock bolts at Salmon holes but there will be within a month. Recfishwest are currently conducting surveys of all the rock fishing platforms in WA with the intention of installing rock bolts, silent sentry life rings and distress beacons at all dangerous locations thanks to funding promised at the last election by the Premier.

these fishers drove past the servo where the Drew Foundation hire for free inflatable PDF's

no excuses for not wearing one.
