(1) Yellowtail trumpeter and also known as Yellowtail Grunter

(2) Trumpeter

Better fish to eat out there, they make a good live bait!

thanks guys. Caught a heap of these today. Everytime i go to hillaries i just catch this and wrasse. Is it just me or there are no other types of fish around in hillaries!

I use prawn and today i changed to wrasse as bait. Setup is straight down sinker.

l've tried whole mullies and tried them off the boat near the reef but nothing was biting.

Any tips where to catch more edible species?

Cheers!

Berley is a very effictive way to bring fish to you. Herring & skippy on the outer reefs would be one of many spots to try. Use a small gang hook with blue sardine/whitebait/anchovie bait and a small split shot on the leader near the bait. That wofting down the berley trail (on anchor) will get some nice eating fish for sure and fun!

Drift around the outer reef areas over broken ground for squid, also sand whiting in similar area as squid!

thanks for the tips guys. l'm actually quite bored of catching little stuff.

Was wondering if there was a location for "filletable" sized fish. eg 40cm-80cm where i could reach with my 3.4m dinghy?

Tried whole mulies and half chopped wrasse on 3 ganged hooks but caught nothing off wanneroo reef.

Wanneroo reef seems like a wrasse/trumpeter factory though...

 Cheers

options!

Current options, throwing metal slices around the outer reef structures and also the inshore reef lines for good size tailor!

Bigger KG's out in the 20-40m mark over broken ground also. As for "bigger" fish, the Swan River is worthy of a fish for mulloway between now & January!

'currently looking for a job, so I fish most days....'

now that's my kind of job search!! lol Cool

Here's what I would recommend.  Go outside the reefs and look for broken ground. drop your anchor in sand that will leave allow you to drift baits back over the broken stuff.  get your berley going, then drift some unweighted baits down the berley trail.  Don't make your bait too big.  This is great in winter for big skippy and some pinkies.  This time of year you could expect some herring, skippy, and maybe some whiting.  All very tasty and good fun on light gear.

Stuck with trumpeter

Thu, 2009-11-19 20:16

I often get stuck with nothing but schools of trumpeter around and I find that the best thing to do is switch to lures. Since I ussually fish in the river for bream I have a lot of smallish lures and I find that when all the trumpeter are swarming you a 3-5 cm lure fished fastish away from the bottom will avoid the trumpeter and pick up the herring that seem to accompany the trumpeter schools.

As an added bonus the herring are great sport on 2 lb line and the odd tailor will get your heart racing especially when losing a lure is equal to an hr or two's pay.
