Any Electricians out there?

Hey Guys,

I am looking to get an apprenticeship in the electrical trade, and wondering if any members on here would be keen on taking me on as an apprentice, or have a little advice on how to get in, what companies are hiring etc.

I am happy to call around and drop off my resume, or can email if that is what you would prefer.

PM me/call me or i can call you, if you know of anything going.

Thanks

Blake

Just a thought .....Print out a shiteload of resumes mate, and stand at the front of Atkins Carlisle or one of those electrical wholesalers. You will be able to meet a heap of sparkies.

Neilson

try Neilson first as they have the biggets jobs going at the momnet, put in resume to EGT but they do pay the worst hourly rate and entitlements but should give you the most exposure to different type of work

Check that one out to see which members are in the electical trade and maybe then shoot them a PM. I know Ox is an electrician and a great bloke too. Maybe get in touch with him for some pointers.

Good luck.

hi there mate, for you info

Mon, 2010-06-28 20:31

hi there mate, for you info the company is NILSENS.  They are a big electrical contacting company.  They do most of the big commercial jobs around.  I have been on many jobs with these guys and they seem like a good company.  They are an EBA based company, so they have good rates of pay and conditions.

I am a sparky myself, but I work in the elevator game, installing and maintaining Lifts.

The company that I work for is going incredibly well, with market share in Perth and soon nationally.  It is a multinational worldwide company.  Google SCHINDLER LIFTS

We take on apprentices every year, I think they start looking for the next intake from now on.  If you want something that is a bit different, it has a large mechanical aspect rather than just electrical work.  There is a large control or electronics aspect to the job as well.  Pay is above and beyond what most sparkies get as well, we are on a great EBA, and have fought long and hard for the conditions that we have now.

If you want some more info I would be more than happy to chat or pass you some details

We just took on a new

Mon, 2010-06-28 20:25

We just took on a new apprentice who had done an electrical pre app. Bit of a pain to do but if you have no luck finding someone to take you on it pretty much guarantees you an apprenticeship at the end of it if. Will also probably shorten you apprenticeship term, I had mine done after 3 years instead of the usual 4 with a pre app. Good luck, Cheers.

Apprenticeships Australia (CCI)

Mon, 2010-06-28 20:56

Blake,

We use Apprenticeships Australia (CCI) when looking for apprentices. They currently don't have any vacancies but keep your eye on thier site or even give them a call you might be able to put your name down for future vacancies.

Duel Trade

Mon, 2010-06-28 21:00

If you are looking for Industrial apprenticeship I would recommend doing a Duel Tade Instrument/Electrical Apprenticeship (More $'s Money mouth ).

As Just Dhu It and Hunterdive said try Nilsen's. Knew a few of the project manager's there a couple of years ago and they do all sorts of work all over the state.

Good Luck,

David

Sparky Action

Great trade to get into and a good idea to ask on here. A group training scheme, despite generally having a lower pay rate, can expose you to a wider variety of installations, jobs and most importantly people.

A good attitude and keeness to learn is remembered much longer than the outlet that didnt work, or the 2 way light switch that wouldnt turn off!

Try not to let the pay rate dictate where you glook for your apprenticeship as it is what you are going to learn during your apprenticeship that will ultimately dictate what you may or may not earn.

O'Donnell Griffen, Downer (RML), Nillson's, Kentz etc. are all good, but Id be taking heed of Wadetolly's suggestion and go to the nearest Electrical wholesaler and dropping off your details - House Bashing and light commercial (IMO) is the best footing in the trade you can get.

Good luck.

Some good tips there!

Tue, 2010-06-29 20:41

Good Point.  I'd have to agree that you might not get as much exposure to a variety of different things at the bigger companies but at the end of the day, the pay rate can be hugely different between the samller companies and a large EBA company.  And four years is a long time to be getting paid half as much as some of your buddies at Tech/TAFE.  Plus you can always move on and try another field after you turn tradesman!

I did my electrical apprenticeship at a company which later became an EBA company.  If they were an EBA company while I did my apprenticeship, I'm pretty sure I would be close to being mortgage free by now because I would've been able to buy a house two years ealier than I did for just over $100K.  Guess that's a bit of luck though too.  EBA rates for 1st years I think are $12.45 + site + travel + super etc.  I'm pretty sure that's well above the award rate you'd probably get at a smaller company???

I have had a lot of apprentices work with me over the last 11 years and would definately agree that attitude counts more than anything else.  I would much rather work with a keen bloke who rocks up on time and puts in a huge effort but might make a few mistakes along the way, over some cocky little prick who thinks he knows it all and spends half the day texting his mates and missus!

If you do score a job -

- Try and actually learn at TAFE.

- Show your boss you are as keen as mustard.

- Leave your mobile in the car!

- And don't forget - Most of us sparkies like a drink of some sort so if you are too young then get your Mum to get it for you!

Good Luck - Just have a crack at it!
