Hey everybody, I am wondering if anybody has any help for me. I am currently down in Bunbury, WA sailing. The middle of next month i am leaving for Exmouth by sail, i have two weeks to make my way up there stopping at various places on the way, inclusing Coral Bay, Shark Bay and the Abrollhas Islands I am new to this sea fishing, being a Pom i usually fish for Carp. Any help would be really good, for example: What fishing takle should i use (rod, reel, line etc), Any suggerstions for methods, what lures work well and any other advice you can help me with.
We will be sailing approx 10 miles off shore at a speed of anywhere between 4/7 knots but seem to average about 5 knots.

Almo That sounds like a fantastic trip
Many of our offshore fishing experts are about to head up to Exmouth for the Fishwrecked Comp and they would be better placed to give you the real expert advice, but I will start off with what I know.
If I was heading up that way I would take at least two separate outfits.
The rest really depends on what your budget is?
The first outfit would be a good quality overhead boat rod capable of handling up to 40 or 50 lb breaking strain line. I would match that with a good strong overhead reel, such as a Shimano TLD or Torsa or Diawa Saltist 40. I would then run a good quality 40 lb braid as my main line, and use a monofilament leader of at least 80 lb.
That outfit would let you bottom fish for species such as Coral Trout, Rankin Cod, Red Emperor, etc.
You will need some good quality hooks, maybe some Circle Hooks size 5/0 and up. And plenty of lead weights.
You could also use that outfit to troll.
There ae plenty of good lures around, but brands such as Halco are always pretty reliable.
The second outfit would have a rod of about 7 foot in length which you could use to throw lures. For the fish up that way you would want something that would handle 40 lb breaking strain line at least. It should be stron in the but end, but with enough whip in the tip to let you throw lures a good distance.
You could match that with a good spinning reel from the Shimano, Daiwa, Abu Garcia, Penn ranges, etc. It really depends on your budget.
You should get some poppers. halco Roosters are pretty good, or you can go for the big gun lures, but they can be pretty expensive.
Whatever you can afford, make sure you have spare braid, leader, leads, lures and hooks as there are big fish up that way and lots of reefs for them to hide in.
Hope this helps.

my dad was just up at the abroholos island. got loads of great fish... have troll with a standard red head halco or something similar for spanish mackeral. all the mackeral caught were on red head lures. bottom bouncing. 15-24kg rod and and overhead reel with 40-50pd main line if ur going for the bigens...use a normal paternostra rig and use either fresh octopus or fish flesh..
good luck and all the best for your trip
