rio manager
Had dinner with a mine manager Sat night before last and he was devo at some of the guys he had to let go. So whats the real consequence of the boom? Few suicides been happening around the place lately too. Not good at all.

Not new
For my 2c worth....
ive been in the WA mining industry for 20+ years, mostly gold and nickel. This has happened before, but I've been through this "manning optimisation" four times in the last three years. Its the worst I have seen and It won't be the last time.

lost track of the amount of times we had to RIGHTSIZE
at MIDLAND BC, worked there for 35 years and its no fun putting employees off, companys did use it to cull underperforming employees as well, and I'm not saying anyone here falls into that situation

you think its hitting hard
you think its hitting hard over there.... its just as bad in NZ...
over x mas, one of the main mechanical contractors shut their doors, over 100 staff gone.
the 4 main electrical contractors here , all have made cuts and in fact one company made every employee "re apply" for their own jobs only to loose them (some of)
Major projects that have been planned for the last 2 years, mothballed or shelfed. Shell Todd, Contact etc etc all the big players here in oil and gas are all wanting to spend cents instead of dollers these days
The project for our client, which they had budget for, has just been ripped from under them and being used elsewhere.... good by my job (hopefully) quite homesick and ready for home due to personal problems in the family back in WA.
and not talking an entire state here, im talking a town somewhere in the size of a town between busselton and bubury....
a hard days fishing still beats work

Strangers
when they announced the cuts it was like someone let a bug bomb off in the office block! We had all these people magically appear asking how they could make our jobs easier, and I'm not talking about 1 or 2 people, there was shitloads of em. But like the others said mainly office workers getting thinned out and managers as there are more Chiefs than Indians so to speak.
This habit is getting expensive!
