Anyone else grown their own fruit and veg?
Submitted by old salt on Mon, 2012-03-05 20:54
Like most people here i love my wild caught fish and love to cook them up with fresh herbs etc form my veggie patch. Does anyone else grow there own veggies etc or i am i part of a dying breed? If you do what do you grow that thrives in perths sunny climate?

Na no chance, too busy
Na no chance, too busy fishing!
I grow some herbs for the kitchen, a cherry tom or two, cape gooseberry, rocket and have a few citrus, some in pots. Mostly my partner's handiwork really.
Actually, here is a great book on the subject!
And another site for people that like to know where the local fruit trees that hang over the fence are:

Thanks for the Urban Tucker link Jamie
I have been thinking about something like that for a while. I have a map for my area with the fruit trees, now I have all of Perth!

Yeah I love growing edible
Yeah I love growing edible things! Our block is only 370m2 but I have 10mx1m of raised garden bed along one side of the house which allows me to atleast grow a few things... hard to pick what I want to grow most though!
Garlic takes over atleast half of my garden during the winter season as it thrives and requires basically no attention ever... and I loveeee garlic! Almost time to start planting actually...
Currently still have a few varietys of Tomatoes and Capsicums growing... couple different types of mint, basil, thyme, sage, parsley.... Some potatoes (The kids wanted to plant some that we found growing in the bottom of the pantry), rocket, a few strawberry plants (a white alpine variety), and lots of Aloe Vera plants... I'm going through a Aloe Vera juice fetish at the moment!
Also have 2 lemon trees, 2 blue berry bushes and 2 Blackberry plants....
So many more things I would love to grow but just dont have the room and the missus doesn't want more pots taking over our small yard!
If anyone hasn't heard of them before check out the Diggers Club! Got heaps of seeds and plants from them in the past.. so many interested varities of the common veggie!

basil is going ape at the moment
, roma tomatoes, mint, thyme, lemon grass, corn, capsicum and rosemary. Also grow mulberries, almonds, mango, lemon, limes, kaffir lime leaves, oregano, passionfruit, black sapota (no fruit as yet), bay, chives, parsley, sage, mandarines and rhubarb. Oh and grapes, pumpkin and eggplant. The pumpkins hang from the grapevine trellis. All in a small garden. It seems as though every time the missus uses a herb I end up buying a plant instead and then she never seems to use it again
Fishin for a feed and fun.

It's great being able to use
It's great being able to use your own fresh produce and be safe in the knowledge that you know exactly what has been put on them. Im currently growing capcicums and tomatoes plus all the herbs that i can.Over the cooler months lettuce, spinach, leeks, snow peas and also lemon, lime, plum trees and passionfruit. The main herb that really cant stand the heat for mine is coriander and mint.so far ive had no dramas with basil, thyme, marjoram, rosemary,Parsely and of course chilli.
Aloe vera juice Goodz? I can remember that from my childhood.Although id rather not! :)

Just pulled out the last of the summer crop
Nothing beats the taste and freshness of home grown produce. Just finished and pulled out the growing of 40x Roma tomato Plants. Also had about 10x basil plants as well.
All was planted at the aim of growing and then producing my own Italian style pasta sauce. I have made sauce plenty of times before and ended up with about 35 bottles of home grown and produced sauce. Knock up a fresh bash of Pasta and stir the sauce through and it is damn to beat!!
I pretty well have some form of veggies growing all year round and am now getting a nice collection of fruit trees in the back yard. For something old school I put in a loquat tree and made my own jam with the fruit. Got a mango and lemon and lime trees ect.
For those that have I Phones, check out the app or website of gardenate. It has planting conditions, times, recommendations, a callender to log when you Planted the seedlings ect. Awesome for the home veggie grower.

YES I'm not alone I've just
YES I'm not alone
I've just bought a place and have planted and grow the following:
Garlic, kale, parsely, mint, thyme, oregano, sage, celery.lettuce, thai basil, vietnamese coriander, lemon grass, squash, zucchini, tomatoes, cucmbers, sweet basil, pumpkins, water melons, rock melons, chillies, rocket, rosemary, pineapple, lime, mandarin, oranges, peach, blueberries, mangoes "neigbours tree over hangs", curry leaves, bush cherries and I think thats about it?
On the to do list are: Grape fruit, olives and maybe a banana plant and passion fruit?
For those of you growing tomatoes what type do well with the 40 degree weather we have over here? I tried several different types and most cooked on the vine? I had fruit for about 2 months only, i've grown tomatoes elsewhere in Aus and manged to get 4 + months of fruit? Anyone got any tips to share, i'm considering putting up some shad cloth next season? If anyone has some spare tomatoe seed that would be greatly appreciated?
Ive plant a few more tomato plants recently that seem to be doing well, hopefully i get some winter tomatoes?

All of the above!
Yeah I don't mind havin a green thumb!
I've got over 30 chilli plants crankin (jalepenos, habaneros, cayenne, bell peppers, etc), and they all get a workout! Pickled chillis are a hit on any trip away, and stuffed fried jalepenos are farkin awes! And I've got enough dried chilli flakes to just about go commercial!
I've got a huge v patch, and it has capsicums, celery, pumpkins, garlic, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, plus heaps of random herbs - basil, parsley, etc, and whatever is right for the season.
It's cool makin shit like pesto's, pickling chillis, and infusing oils (garlic, chilli, basil) to use when their not in season.
Then there's the "special" trees in the shed......

How do you go with cross pollination
With so many chillis? I read that they are prone to losing their potency within few generations as the cross pollination levels the hot ones down and the cool ones up to somewhere in the middle?

Correct!
That's dead right, they do cross polenate, but it's never been a problem for me. I think it's something that only the diehard superhot chilli lovers get finicky over.
They are mostly in different areas throughout the garden though, which does help. I have heard of hot capsicums though, from being grown too close to chilli plants.
I do have a naga jolokia right next to a habanero patch, and it hasn't bothered either potency wise for over 3 years. The jolokia is just stupid hot though. You can't really do anything with the chillies, except prank your mates by rubbing one around the rim of his stubbie!!

My lemon tree can't keep
up with all the fish I eat. Basil, cherry tom ( had the best batch this summer), tasty valencia oranges - OJ evryday when they are ripe. My passionfruit tree is booming and had the tastiest ones to date. Snowpeas were great (1st time ever). rhubarb just keeps growing.
Not sure if anyone has noticed, but at some round-a-bouts in Noranda looks like they have been planting spinach instead of flowers.

Cracking
Had a cracking garden up here last winter, everything dies through summer though. :( Got a photo here somewhere, have to find it. Corn, tommies, chillies, ginger, spring onion, capsicum, brocoli (+mini brocoli), cauli's, mini eggplant, rockmelon, bok and pak choi and then all the herbs. Almost time to start again, just need it to drop a few degrees.

just out of interest do any
just out of interest do any of you water thr patch with bore water or freshwater only? From what i have read the bore water isnt recommended due to high level of sulphur, iron and low levels of arsenic? It seems all other plants in my garden like it as they are doing well? Im interest to know if its safe for some veggies?

Pretty much every market
Pretty much every market garden within 100km of Perth, Gero or Carnarvon would be watered with bore water. Not sure who is dishing out those wobblies about bore water!
