anyone get a hail damged car?

i was wondering if anyone else bought a hail damaged car

my grandad picked up a ssangyong actyon sports turbo diesel for fishing for close to half price, he's very happy with the car and it pulls the boat easy, all it had was lots of hail dents on the bonnet and roof, but great for fishing

anyone else get a bargain with the hail damaged cars

I was thinkin about it, I reckon its going to be a "craze" where ppl will buy them now, but sooner or later it will fade and most people wont want dented cars, as every time they look at their car it will look like crap... Eventually it will be really hard to sell, so even if i pick up a decent baragin now will i be able to sell it later on without losing thousands????

as for your grandad sounds like he did gd.. i reckon if its 4wd and a fishing vehicle who really cares about dents? but i think it will be a different story on road cars, as astetics is a big factor. ppl might not mind at first but IMO they will get over it soon enough.

Whats other ppl views it would be interesting to see??

Thu, 2010-04-08 16:38

no probs there

the dents are mainly on the bonnet and a little on the roof that you cant really see

the bonnet can be replaced if he wanted to sell it

he wont get much for it if he was selling it but who cares he got for so damn cheap so he doesnt care

yeah but for a fishing car its great

we talked to the dealer and he said the hail was nearly the size of a fist or a tennis ball

Hail Damaged Cars

Thu, 2010-04-08 17:43

Be very carefull buying hail damaged vehicles or any damaged vehicles that have been written off and paid out by an insurance company, the DPI have introduced a law quite some time ago that if a vehicle has been paid out as an "Economic Write Off" by an insurance company it is automatically de-licensed, there are strict rules and regulations governing the relicensing of this type of car.

If it is a "Statutory Write Off" it can NEVER be relicensed as the VIN number is destroyed, this ruling can never be reversed.

Beware

Thu, 2010-04-08 18:02

I had my car written off and could easily have bought it back but the asking price was such that it wasn't worth it. Some parts of the car (bonnet etc) could be fixed but the roof and door structures etc would be way too costly. I would never be happy ultimately driving a car looking like a golf ball and the chances of me selling it or using it as a trade on a newer vehicle would be ZERO!

So, for the longer term I decided to take the money and bought a lot better vehicle because there seem to be plenty of 4x4s out there at the moment (probably as a result of the mining boom and cashed up people).

I completely agree with Northwest. Over a very short period of time you would come to the conclusion that the car you had bought is ugly and a piece of shit. You would most likely then treat it accordingly and...wallah! The car is of no value at all to you or anyone else.

I needed to add that there is information regarding relicensing of written off vehicles on the Government web site under Department of Infustructure, Written Off Vehicle Register (WOVR), this should be read before contemplating purchasing such vehicles.

as i said the car is

the car is only very  lightly damaged with only  hail dents on the bonnet and some on the roof, nothing that would affect anything

i would much rather by a new car with new engine and a few dents than get a secondhand car that could of been used on the mines etc

a friend bought a prado recently used on the mines, used, but hey its a toyota what could go wrong, a power steering failure and  airconditioner failure later he's not making fun of our mitsubishi anymore! lol

and for the piece of shit looking car, he's 70 years old and not trying to impress anyone so its fine

The purpose is to stop people "Rebirthing", that is buying a damaged car and swapping all the details onto a stolen car, also to stop the "Back yarders" doing a bodgey repair job and selling to to some unsuspecting person.

To be honest....I havent really seen any "hail damaged" cars that are worth buying. Some werent even discounted much.

Ive been eyeing a particular car prior to the storm. After the storm it dropped by $600 from $23k which was what I saw last. But the current ad says "reduced from $28k" !! What a load of BS, I wont be buying from that dealer....

really care about a new car with hail damage because it does not affect the performance in any way shape or form just small dents (on most of the cars) or a broken windscreen, i think its just the peope that think their to good to be driving around in a car with dents, thats what stops most of the people buying them and there is some pretty good deals around like a 2010 mitsubishi triton that was $42000 but was reduced to $36000 or a ssangyong aycton ute that was $36000 but was reduced to $27000 both are turbo deisel dual cabs

cheap Ssangyongs

Sat, 2012-06-09 22:15

I bought a brand new undamaged Ssangyong SUV on 28th June 2011, yes about the end of the financial year, they were advertised @ $32,000

Offered just $22,200 (twenty two K) drive away for a turbo diesel, 5 sp manual, with new tow bar fitted, for a brand new vehicle with just 80 Km on the clock after I had 'road tested' it :)

Towed my 4.2mt Stacer up to Carnarvon and would not know it was back there, got 9.6Lt per 100Km @ 100 KPH that trip, now 15,000Km kater (12 months old) is around 8Lt per 100Km

Handles the sand really well too with it's High/low range transmission, 18" alloy wheels and with just 2cm less ground clearance than a 100 series LandCruiser

there are some bargains out their at this time of year

too good?? Mate, we're not talking about a few hundred dollars here!!

I understand some people would buy them becoz its what they can afford but what if you decide to repair it??

I rather spend my hard earn money on a car that has a few more K's than one with a few dents.

I agree Honsu

There may be some "percieved" good bargains but when you look at spending those sort of bucks it becomes an investment. It's kinda like buying shares with no resale value - it doesn't make sense. The only way to realise any value out of such an investment would be to fix the dents and that in itself is extremely expensive and why the car was reduced in the first instance.

Back to my original point.. If it looks like shit you will most probably treat it like shit. Buy something you will be proud of IMO.

I inquired about hail

Sat, 2010-04-10 09:11

I inquired about hail damaged "new stock" in a Welshpool holding yard, to be told by the dealer that they covered by the manufacturers, as they had not taken delivery yet, so not there loss...
Best deal I was offered was $2500 off on a new XR6, which is less than a 7% discount!!!

A work mate looked at a Prado demo, with hail damage and he too was only offered about 12% saving, the same as you loose on a new vehicle if you drive it out the door!

Funny thing is a dealer in Morley offered only $40k for a 2008 Prado on a trade with no hail damage at all!!! so what would they have got on a hail damaged car.

my advise, go to www.redbook.com.au and look at the resell value of the vehicle as a 2010 model or second hand value with less than 10,000km and take 20% off that. Thats what you should be paying for a hail damaged car.

2009 Toyota Landcruiser Prado GXL GRJ120R
* Private Price Guide $44,200 - $48,300
* Trade In Price Guide $37,600 - $41,700
* Average Km 15,000 - 25,000
Price Guide $57,040* Price Guide
*(Price Guide - refers to the price provided to us by a manufacturer for a vehicle and excludes costs, such as options, dealer delivery, stamp duty, and other government charges, that may apply. Always check the single figure price with the seller of a vehicle before purchasing)

thats straight from Redbook for a 2009 Prado GXL,
So for a 2010 Prado GXL hail damaged new car, I'd not go a penny over trade in min value, $37,600 as thats the MAX you'd get the next day as a trade, even for for a hail damaged 2010 car.

the old saying "buyer beware" is more true now than ever...

just my view

yes as i said

Sat, 2010-04-10 10:29

lots were rip off's but he got much more $ off than what you have been quoted

as i said its primarily a fishing car, pulling a boat etc, and doesnt need a flash car(hence why he got a ssangyong), once you take a car "real offroading" you will not be worried about scratches and dents anymore i can tell you that

and he would much rather have a few dents than have a second hand car with engine problems etc

keep in mind this car was "very lightly damaged" with some small dents on the bonnet a couple on the roof and around the car

as for "if it looks like shit youll treat it like that"

my father has a 23 year old hilux that looks like shit, yes, but its definetely not treated like that and its still going strong and its never had any major issues and is very capable offroad since its got huge ground clearance for a stock car

he would not have bought one of those heavy damged one's that were absolutely smashed, i agree they were ripoff's for what they were going for

you cant see them from a distance because they are only small dents

Buying my old one back

Sat, 2010-04-10 11:14

I'm planning to buy my "economic write off" back on tuesday.

was paid out 17k for it.  I figured it was worth around 14k.  So I'm already ahead 3k.

Yes i could be a courier for golden eggs on my days off.  Bonnet would hold 5 dozen easily!!

Owned it for 3 years, known it and trusted it.  Despite its aesthetic imperfections I know this car will keep going and continue to serve me well.

It will need a new windscreen at a cost of $1200 fitted.

I have my budget set at 3k

Will be back on the road for a touch over 4k.

Will update all Tuesday evening. Lets hope its good news.

Sun, 2010-04-11 13:18

a top auction adviser has again warned people to know the true value and buyer-beware. He says anything under 30% discounted, you should be walking away. ( Friday nights news)
And I agree with him.

In today's paper I found a 2009 Ford G6 Ltd demo, no hail damage etc....at a dealer for $500 more than I'm paying for a brand new 2010 model...WTF

A girl we chatted to last night at the movies who's car we saw in the car-park, Mitsubishi Lancer ( 2006 model coupe) with very bad hail damage economic-write off. But she settled with the insurance on a keep & pay-out. ie she keep the car ( looks like a gold ball. hundreds of dents)
she got a 50% pay out and kept the car. She is using the money she got for her studies, so you can wheel&deal with the insurance guys.

One dealer in Ozzy-park, jacked up all the prices of their cars after the storm by 20% and is now offering a 35% discount...WTF how many people will be caught there!! The one BMW was $55k, now selling for $68k less 35%...buyer beware and do your homework.

good luck to the bargain hunters, some will get great deals, others will scratch their head in a few months or a years time and say " why did I fall for it"

Did anyone go to the auctions and get a bargain yesterday???
Heard from work mate that some cars went at 50% and better discounts.
He backed down on a Toyota they where after when it went over 50% of it's value, but his mate got a second hand hail damaged Mitsubishi Lancer for his wife for $6000, half of the book value!!!! needs new back window only.

How was that Merc AMG that went for $230k and book value was $400k!!!! that has to be a bargain, as repairs can not be more than $50k with a good panel beater connection!
A good old fashion panel beater than knows their trade can work out any dents with white metal and a ball-hammer! Too many of the shops these days just fit and spray new panels and parts!!!

yeh i heard about those auctions, a mate of mine went and purchased a brand new 2010 turboed vw golf, only had 1000km and the smallest dents ever, the only dents were on the roof and barely anywhere else, usually retail for around 35k, he got it for 23...some cheap cars were sold!

Thu, 2010-04-15 12:51

thats a good deal, considering the small dents etc.

just heard a chap bought a Holden V8 SS ute brand new from the auction for $20k and they having it resprayed and panel betten for under $6k, thats not bad at all. Car is going to a panel beater in Kalgoorlie I hear.

that good be a good bet, buy one here and send to Kal or Geraldton etc and get it fixed up there where they have less work...
