We have a spot in the 70's

Mon, 2008-11-24 17:00

We have a spot in the 70's there is a Mako that comes to visit each time we are there ... first sign of him is his grey on the dorsal fin when he is seen out circling the sea bag then cruises in to the stern... turns on his/hers side and looks directly at us while it goes past. It's a pretty spooky experience but AWESOME at the same time!

First time it came to visit I was so scared I didnt want anyone to try and catch it even though the guys were jumpin around trying to find a suitable trace... next time I relaxed a lil and said yeh ok- but I sat up on the Hard top soon as the bait went over -just in case it jumped in the boat like ya hear them do...over went a whole mullet... yep he took it and the no acrobatics he just took it and sat under the boat with it till the line went!

The mako is the best eating

Mon, 2008-11-24 17:29

The mako is the best eating of all the sharks.  It also thinks it's a marlin and loves to jump when hooked.

Be switched on...

Tue, 2008-11-25 15:42

...if you're going to try to catch one of these. It's like lighting a fuse, because when you hook up BOOM!

We used to target these things on purpose, off the Pacific coast of Mexico. But we were young and stupid. We got a little five footer into the boat and had to go up the ladder to the tower (three of us) since it went ballistic and smashed everything on deck.

I recall hooking another that had his head out of the water, jaws snapping as he charged the boat...it was like the poster from "Jaws" except no naked lady. Just three pairs of brown pants!

Whatever wild stories you've heard about makos, it's all pretty close to being true!

Hi Ya,

There are four great photos on this thread and all of them include a mako Laughing

Jeez, Matt, that is one cute look. LaughingLaughingLaughing   Likely to modelling it in the shop over the next few days?

Couldn't help laughing at the birds in the 2nd pic.  They sure got their eyes peeled with their heads underwater.  Can't say I blame them.Laughing

Cheers.

Threatening

Mon, 2008-12-29 14:45

Having seen both big makos and white pointers up close swimming around the boat many times I think the mako is the most threatening to look at,the eyes never leave you for the whole time they are there.

Mako

Mon, 2008-12-29 15:30

Had a mako about 14-15foot cruising alongside the boat while we pulled sharknet[pro]about 100metres off Three Bears surfing spot, just south of Sugarloaf.Only noticed it when I threw in a 5kg buff bream,it just swallowed it,no bite at all. Will never forget the menacing look as this thing swam round and round the boat never taking its eyes off us.

Tossed another buff in complete with big hook and wire but wouldn't take it.Couldn't even get anyone's attention on the shore to warn the surfers of it being there
