ANZAC Fishing

I got an email from Soupster recently – he is doing it hard protecting us all on his way to a secret destination for naval exercises. “I combined with the Navigator and we hit the CO for a fish over Laywood Shoal (about a day west of Darwin). We trolled at seven knots, stopping as required. Sometimes we didn't even get back up to seven knots before stopping again due to another fish being caught. It was an awesome couple of hours. The CO was over the moon with how happy it made the crew, so I have no doubt that it will happen again.”

Keep it up Soupster.  I sleep much better knowing you are out there protecting us.

Cheers Pete

Fri, 2008-07-04 10:19

Permission was obviously granted and I would hope that some 'do gooder' would not go down that path.

These fellow aussies are there for us and this lot are away from their families for at least 3 months.  Scott has his second bub due before his ship is back in port, so big congrats to the CO for allowing this.  This does not happen every day, thats for sure.  They are all working 24/7 for 3 months+.

Fri, 2008-07-04 20:34

I recognise the top two tuna as mack tuna, and the one on the right is an albacore, but would the other three be longtails(nothern bluefin)?

I think it's great that those guys are catching their own food and saving a bit of taxpayer hard-earned....well done, fellas!

I used to be on the same class of ship and on occasions we used to get to have a fish around Chrissy Island etc. Big YFT and wahoo. My brother was on a patrol boat as a nav and used to fish some awesome ground off cape laveque etc for big spanyids and more.

Flex!

Sat, 2008-07-05 12:00

Already seen the pics but yeh pretty funny how he makes the big CO stop for a quick fish. The crew would function better with a bit of time off considering they're rostered on 24 hours a day so a bit a flex.....rod flex that is :)

Well done again mate, look forward to catching up with ya on return and we'll get some fish!

ANZAC Fishing

Tue, 2008-07-08 05:15

  Good to see Soupy getting some fish.

I have just read some of the posts and would like to point out to potential do gooders that serving in the Navy may require long periods at sea without break and this activity may have occurred on a Sunday afternoon. Who would begrudge anyone an afternoon off for a fish? These activities prove very good as a distraction from what can be a tedioustime after weeks at sea. I just feel sorry for Soupster, the poor fellow is only serving on ANZACs and not real Warships (TIC), ........and he used to be a Gunbuster!

From my experience with Armed Forces meals - a nice fresh fillet would be welcome. And they are welcome to a few bucks of my taxes as they will make better use of them than those parasites in Canberra.

armed with!

Tue, 2008-07-08 15:31

The Anzac's armed with

* 5 inch Mk45 Mod 2 automatic rapid fire gun,
* Mk 41 vertical launch system with Sea Sparrow anti-air missile,
* Harpoon Anti-Ship Missiles,
* 2 x Mk32 Mod 5 triple mounted torpedo tubes,
* 4 x 50 calibre (12.7mm) machine guns

*ohhh and some rod & reel combo's....hehehe Laughing

The Anzac is the only Australian warship to see action since Korea i think, the first Gulf war saw this ship shoot at the Taliban!

  MMmmmmmm, well Vietnam at least

But Ryan, you miss the point, they are such little ships fitted with only one gas turbine and a diesel.

Update!

Thu, 2008-07-31 14:43

Just got a phone call from Soupy just then and the ship has docked and the navy boys are loose on the town. They have 6 days off and some guys have started their big benders with Soupy having a big Innocent atm. They will be at sea for another 3 months and then home.

Re the pics, Soupy was told by the captain he could have 1 hour to fish only. The captain then came down and Soupy pointed out the morale of the crew how it lifted so the Captain said give them another hour!

A small perk, since then its been all work....16 hours perday/7 days a week....many more months to go!

He's looking forward to coming home!
