ATTN: suzuki outboard owners
Submitted by scotto on Wed, 2011-06-22 17:18
My brand new suzuki outboard that i had fitted late last year, is starting to get a funny looking "scaly" surface on the enamel of the leg, but only in a small localised area, i think near its gearbox. its been there for a few months, but it is progressively getting worse.
the other side of the leg is NEARLY fine, with only a very small amount of the "scaling" only just starting to appear. my concern is its only happening in a localised area, perhaps from heat, or maybe some chemical/oxidization?
anyone else out there know what this is, or had this happen to any of their motors? its a 115 4 stroke.
all feedback appreciated.

Cavitation
Look like its caused by cavitation / turbulence from the water flowing over the bolt on cover.

Exhaust
Have a 140 with the same thing and have seen it on all others I know.
Asked about it and was told it was due to the exhaust that runs thru that section of the leg. When under way it comes out of the water and the heat from the exhaust cooks the salt water to that crusty appearance.
Was told it can be cleaned off with a chemical (forgot what they said) or you can leave it.
Was told you could set something up to spray water at it constantly, like a live bait pickup and then it wouldnt appear. TBH I couldnt be bothered and have left it.

same but not to that extent
looks more like the 'white' residue you get from hard water (calcium) so supports the same theory above.
just wash it well after use which is not out of the ordinary
I have a 115 as well.

All motors get it, just the black ones stick out more. All of my motors have had it and it is easily sorted with CLR (as Stevo has pointed out) or vinegar, which is what I use. Run it over your windows as well, its heaps good as it is a de-calcifier.

mine too. I have a honda and never knew what it was.... I will try the CLR trick when I get a chance. I know of 3 other hondas that have the same problem so it is not uncommon.
