Baitcaster Vs Spin
Submitted by chris308 on Sat, 2010-05-22 09:03
Are low profile baitcaster reels better than spin Reels for targetting bream etc ??
Are there major advantages or disadvantages ?
I'm thinking of getting an outfit, but some of the info I've seen on the net always mentions backlash.
Is this still a major problem?

Most breamos use spin
I dont know the reason because light baicasters cast very accurate but are harder to master. It might be the finesse factor. A 1000 size real is light as a feather, cast all day and have sufficient power to stop any bream (mostly). A baitcaster has more grunt. I would use my Curado on Barra etc, but I wouldnt dare use my little Okuma V system on them (it would crunch, IMO the V system would crunch anyway -- dont like it) and the other way around the Curado is overkill on bream.
Hope this helps

OH I forgot something
Baitcasters dont like light lures, like the tiny ones used on bream.

yer if your casting
yer if your casting lightweight lures forget it.
you will get more distance and less problems with a spin outfit. especially if you havent used a baitcaster before.

Thanks for the info Crasny1.
Thanks for the info Crasny1. Much appreciated.
I already have a 2-4 kg outfit, 7ft rod with 2500 size reel. I'll just stick to that.
I was just wondering if the baitcaster would be easier to cast longer and further, as I saw a DVD where these guys were casting spin outfits like they were cracking a horse whip! Allone handed too!! I just haven't been able to master this feat, so thought maybe a baitcaster would do the trick.
What spec rod do you have your curado on?

My Bream/squid/gp setup
Is almost the same, 7' 2-4 kg gladiator graphite, with an okuma hs30 with 4kg. My workmate Andrew (Fellow FW member Breambert) uses a 6' graphite rod with a calcutta 200b and does some bullshit casts with it. In amongst the trees/overhangs the short rod is good. Almost a baseball hit style, singlehanded and having the freespool on the baitcaster means they can take line and when you are happy click it over and strike. All this being said, he predominately fishes with bait or sp's.

Thanks cudbfishin for your advice. Nup haven't used one before, just wondering if it would help in the long run to enable me cast further than using a spin.
I forgot to mention that I run mono.
I hear that braid is the way to go, and will also help to cast further. I just haven't taken the plunge as there seems to be so many opinions on what to use.
What do others use on thier outfits to target bream, whiting & flathead

I use Fireline and Fins Braid
There are better braids out there but IMO it is not worth the price unless you are out to win comps. But with braid and bream make sure you have a long windon leader with as low a breaking strain fluoro as you can bear to avoid spooking the bream. The finesse factor again. Bream and braid dont mix at the sharp end.
I dont run swivels with braid and bream as the twist is reduced.
Hope this helps. PS there are tons better breamos on here than me so JMO.

I've been using Platypus
I've been using Platypus Super 100 mono - 8lb with 8lb Rovex fluorocarbon leader. I don't use swivels and join the two with a double uni. Never had a problem with it, unlike my 12 year old son with equally specced outfit. He had to have vanish and it keeps on turning into a birds nest for him.
8lb = 3.6kg.
Given the reel is 2500, would this be suitable? or is it overkill?
If I took the mono off and replaced it with braid. Would you go down to say 6lb or even less??
Will a smaller spin reel work ok on the 7ft 2-4kg rod I have ??

2500 is suitable but
2500 is suitable but overkill. 1000 size is the best. For repeat casting weight wiseI think 4-6lb is heaps. Yip a smaller reel will work but you might loose some balance in the outfit. It is a compromise.
