 i secon the Senator 114H...

i secon the Senator 114H... especially with beach fishing. Keep it Simple.  No need to be taking the expensive high end gear onto the sand... Sand always gets into the reels. A Penn Senator will not be bothered by a bit of sand and sea water.

Alvey

Tue, 2012-04-17 10:25

Rails, i have a deep spool 650 Alvey mounted onto a 8wrap 3.0m custom built Sabre of around the 32kg mark. Fishing LBG mainly from rock ledges, i think simple tuff gear is the go, the aim is to get the fish in with a minimum amount of fuss. If there are sharks around no reel will be fast enough to outrun them so i go for the KISS method (keep it simple stupid) Load the reel up with a good quality 80lb braid, lock yourself in & enjoy good quality bare bones LBG. The alvey will take all kinds of punishment from laying on the rocks to dropping in the sand & with a quick dunk in the water it's ready to go.

I have had this setup for around 25 years now & when we go to Quobba or the likes it is always my first choice in the tackle bag.

cheers & stay safe

I have to agree with deckie. I have a 650c with 1100 + m of 50 lb mono attached to an old 12ft butterworth beach rod. It isnt expensive but does the trick nicely. Easy to use and will consistantly take the thrashing that big fish will place on your tackle. I got myself a small shark at jurien on the 14 th from about 250 to 300 off shore and landed it in under 10 minuites.

Laughing at the comment...

"If there are sharks around no reel will be fast enough to outrun "

Let me just say... the more you try and scull drag a fish, the more fish you will lose to the sharks!!!

Im not going to tell you how to fish.... but just read that comment and take from it what you will!!!

Thanx

Fri, 2012-04-20 08:17

I am glad your not telling me how to fish..lol but you would be surprised how many people try to do it & they think a high speed reel would be the way to go instead of free spooling & giving the fish a chance. But then if you think that will work then you are just as mistaken. Once a fish is hooked LBG, unless it gets off then it is pretty much doomed either way. That gets us into a whole new thread about the unfortunate hooking of billfish, that has been done to death.

cheers & be safe

Rob

Hey there new here

Thu, 2012-05-17 17:16

Hi there new here how is everyone I fish quobba every year and have for about 8 years started out with an alley set up but now use  a 9 ft custom game rod with a tld 50. 2 speed bout 800 m 50lb mono with 100m 100lb wind in leader. Managed to land 2 sailys last year one cut and released the other shared by a 12 foot tiger at base of boundaries cliff. I find the game rod gives you that extra holding power once you have your fish on the bottom ledge especially if it is swelly day the surge is unbelievable.oh yeah use bout 3m trace allows your fish to dangle over edge off rocks if the swell recedes.
