Banax Kingpins busted on day one!!

Ok so we bought 2 kingpins as soon as they came out as they seemed to be a good reel for your dollar but we were wrong! Now we took them out for the first time jigging for sambos, had several hookups on each and were initially wrapped with the performance. The drag was super smooth, they felt good to use and they landed some big fish, however they obviously have a design fault. As you can see in the picture the reel stem snapped clean off from the main body of the reel!! On reel one this happened after 5 fish and on reel two after only 4 fish. One reel you could put down to a monday build but two reels is more than a coincidence especially at the exact same spot! Obviously a weak spot in the reel and i hope that banax recall these reels and fix the problem. Overall the reels were good and if it wasn't for this problem i would be happy to keep on using it. So if you are thinking of getting one i would reconsider, at least until they change the design. More photos are available if you are interested. Now to find that extra $1000 for a Saltiga!

I was speaking to my mate Gribbo yesterday and he said he's seen all manner of reels come back with broken stems, from spheros's to saltiga's.  Sure there is a case for some of them to be a manufacturer fault, but if it was a regular thing, you would see these sort of threads on many forums all over Aus.  It's why I think this reel has been given an unfair wrap and will give it further investigation.  I'm sure Steve will be able to comment more once he's looked over them.

I'm not a tackle junkie or a big jigger so Im not all that bothered by this thread, but that link you posted certainly makes for interesting reading.

I think I'll stay out of this stouche other than to say fatigue is usuallly the cause of most reel breakages from my experience.

Lets hope the feedback is taken onboard and designs are improved by any manufacturer that has their gear used by forum participants, because the bottom line is that forums are simply vehicles for feedback, both positive and negative, as people simply wish to share experiences usually without any malice.

We have had the CEO of Penn on here in the past as well as Steve from Banax and now Simon. The feedback that we all provide on a daily basis is invaluable for those guys so don't let it stop. Just make sure we play the product not the man as I am sure Simon will take all this on board and uses the info to improve his product which will in turn benefit joe public..

Thank you Andy,

From a manufacturers perspective, I need actual parts to inspect to make any decisions on whether or not to make any production or design improvements.

To date I still have no parts sent back from the charter to inspect, or pics etc.

Although we have sent the charter spare parts on his word, because he needs to operate to survive. We still haven't seen a broken handle.

Other charters we supply have been instructed to report any similar issues, at this point we can't understand it, based on in house tests. The charters specificly contacted target doggies and GT's.

A number of things don't add up.

- It can't be a batch issue, parts are assembled randomly from large buckets. Finished assemblies or sub assemblies are picked randomly also.

The handle design is meant to meet a shear break load 200kg, (in other words if you rest 200kg on it, it should shear off, and leave the rest of the reel in perfect condition.)

Which removes any potential to blow out a sideplate or strip gears, which would be a write off.

Replacing the handle is quick and cheap

If I find that a 50% handle strength increase, damages other parts internaly, under test load, that would result in reducing a trial to 25% increase and so on.

But, these calculations of shear strength have allready been done at design phase, and tested and aproved @ 200kg.

Unfortunately the internal tests, and calc's don't mimick real life variables. This is exactly why we supply charters, and back them up with full support on any issue, whether it be assembly , material or design. With support of parts on express post, no questions asked, while we investigate any possible reasons (when we get something to inspect)

However at this point I already have a few major designs being worked on based on the verbal information so far.

This involves new models based on what seems to be the only ever possible issue received (verbally) in 3 years and over 3500 reels.

But and a big BUT, the handel strength will always be a designed weakest link, for practical reasons as described above.

Simon

Handle ??

Mon, 2010-01-18 16:56

Have you got the reels back from the original poster, if so what conclusions have you got as to why these 2 reels broke are they a design flaw or has it to do with poor quality metals or what ??

I'm more interested in the reels posted that if a handle works , have you had any other reels with major fractures like the 2 reels in the original pictures.

Mav....the broken reels

Mav....the broken reels posted were Banax KingPin.  The TuffTackle was a way off side track issue, nothing directly to do with this thread.....

Thanks for that , I was wondering how it got to handles when the reels were broken at the stem / body.

Man this is doing my head in, I'm so glad I only use Stella's , saltigas, Torsa's and Van Stalls to jig with.

PS the new Maquesa's are looking good.

Just put my two cents in

Tue, 2010-01-19 03:17

Just put my two cents in about Banax, I've got two GT5000 and they are SOLID only thing I dont like is the drag. Other than that the handle knob snapped off winching in a big snapper sinker from a hundred metres. Gottem pretty cheap so Im not complaining.

Just a quick question, does anyone know if you can get better drag washers to fit gt5000's?

Cheers

was on a jigging charter a week ago

(no names no court marshals)

i personally saw 3 times that day a 400 gram jig left swinging freely while moving between spots by a several customers and you guessed it whammo smashed straight into the reels handle repeatedly with some great force as you can imagine...

wonder how much of this abuse youd expect your reel to cop as for the impact im not an engineer but it seems obvious to me this happening will also add to fatigue premature failure etc.

ooops..

Wed, 2010-02-24 12:52

we did a test on the banax kingpin it performed well. but only on a little 5kg sambo..

but my Saltiga dogfifght performs to the point of nearly ripping me of the boat with a double hookup on Sambo's, just have to love those reels only the best.
