light lines

hey fishwrecked. anyone who has experience with light pe line classes, i am finding it hard to pick a line to spool a stella 5000sw. it has a very narrow spool, ideally id like to have 250+ metres, so i can cast to nrthern bluefin, and longtail. That leaves me @ no higher than pe2, locally i can get ygk powerhunter 24lb, or daiwa sw8 25lb. i cant find the diametre of these, and they are @ different locations so it is hard to tell which is the thinner. Does any one use these lines or otherrs also does anyone use a 5000SW and for what purposes?

The spool states 0.30mm 230m.

thanks to all!

predominately plastics

the reel will be predominately for plastics, occyjigs, and light jigging with knifes, hence why i want jigging braid, i spose it isnt really necessary though it goes with the nice reel. anyway cheers!

i just close my eyes open my wallet, and cop the lashings at the end of the month. its cool.

yeah i could only fit 190 m of pe3 ygk ultra jigman. i was supprised too. id like to have pe3 i could chase barra, jacks, and majority of the reefies around here. and 25lb is really getting light for those knuckle busting first few metres against a 4kg trout.

I know that tufline xp and power pro 50lb is 0.30mm, and I'd wager that Whiplash would be around the same ballpark. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get 300yd of 30 whiplash on your Stella 5000......

I thought pe is the a measure of the cross sectional area?

Assuming the lines have a round profile two pe 2 lines should have the same diameter.

it should be 0.22 mm

Yep, PE ratings are a rating

Yep, PE ratings are a rating of the area (which you can work out to get a curved line showing PE rating vs diameter. So, given say a PE2 line, all manufacturers should have the same diameter line. Unfortunately, PE ratings can be a bit off. E.g. some lines say PE2 when really they're thicker, or some say PE5 but really they're a little bit thinner (cause some people assume PE5 always equals 50lb and they want to make it easier)

what am i missing then?

what am i missing then? PE3=0.285mm, but i cant get 200m pe3 ygk ultra onto spool that states 230m @ 0.300mm..

i can only assume that the ygk ultra is larger than average, also considering the pe3 breaks above 47lb... its all too hard sometimes. : )

That would probably be the case. Though, adding backing can mean you loose quite a few m. I think with the SW stellas you cant tie the braid direct to the spool (usually you can if you loop around lots with the right knot) but some people use electrical tape. Make sure you spool it really tight too (so the braid doesnt bed in, but also with capacity). How closely does the 200m of ygk ultra fit? (its quite odd that it wouldnt, unless you have heaps of backing).

If you can take a few measurements, its not too hard to work out capacities and how much line will fit (the only problem is that you need the line measurements, e.g. on the spool to get accurate results). Unfortunately theres a mistake on the shimano site

Sun, 2010-02-14 18:25

minmimal backing 20lb mono, double loop, knot, 2 inches, mainline so three wraps of the spool total. well put it this way if i wanted to cast with it id only put 150 or 160 of the ygk 3 ultra. and those measurements are off the spool. i havent looked at the shimano site yet. anyway i figure that @ 47lb brreaking strain it would have to be @ the fat end of the pe3 bracket. horses for courses, cant get too strung up on it, im just going to put the ygk power hunter pe2.5 28lb, im sure i wont be fishing the reel above 10kg anyway, probably only 10kg @ half spool screaming off into the distance.

who cares just enjoy it right!!!
