Barges Jaunt on Sunday
Well gents, looks like a cracker on Sunday, and asuming the weather holds out, was thinking of doing a trip out to the barges in my 540 as not too often you get such a nice day suited to the smaller boats.....not real keen on heading out just with one boat so if anyone else is keen to go out for an early season jig let me know and we can hook up, preferably in a similar speed boat as there is nothing worse than going with a much faster or slower bloat.
I have a 540 Trailcraft with 90 hp, normally sit on 24 knots in good weather and have the GPS co-ords for all the barges and about 8 other wrecks logged in my sounder, so far have found and fished all 3 barges and 4 of the 8 other wrecks.
Not sure how the 500 kW Raymarine A70 sounder will go in the Traily, seemed OK in 75 m of water a few weekends ago, have previously gone out to the barges in a larger boat with a 1 kW Furuno, which was pretty darn good. Still, the barges stick out like the proverbial, so should be OK. Some of the other wrecks are much more subtle.
Probably plan on leaving very early from Hillarys and maybe a beer at the Rotto pub on the way home. Till and Chrisp have indicated interest, so my boat probably full.
PM me if you are interested.

early?
a workmate was out there late last week i his 24ft kevlacat. spent 5 hours on the wrecks for 2 big skippy. he reckons there were a few tiny dots on the sounder, but s.f.a touchin the jigs, and the skippy were caught on bait. also strong current too.
still, if the weather hangs out, i'll still be out and about chasin somethin! theres still plenty sbt's around.

gav077 was out there last
gav077 was out there last weekend and he said the sambos were pretty thick in some spots, just damn hard getting them interested in anything. I think they only ended up with 2-3 around the 15kg mark for a full day's fishing.
... chaffed underarms after a day like that

no probs
mate we went out last week got like 15 amberjack & 20 sambos just look for the fish on the sounder not so much ground, the ambers usually sit on the edges of the wrecks/barges so slowly sound around but dont bother dropping unless the fish are showing on the sounder. They also sit in between the 50 to 80 mt mark depending on the day if you are fishing in say 100mts.
We head out all the time in small boats around 5m you will be fine.
Its wise to do a few dummy drifts over the school as well to pin point them before the first drop.
there were guys next to us using bait catching nothing so mix up your jigs & give it a crack good luck
It used to hurt when I got cock in my ass......now I can take three at once and not feel a thing!

Yep, we had the same at the northern barge in June, thought they were big SBT's but the colour was not dark enough on top and then we made them out for Ambers......evaporated by the time we had rigged up a hardbody......e

Call me full of sh*t if you want
I have Dived the "Barges " out in the graveyard a few times. The sambos hook up with you around 40-50m mark and circle you all the way down to the wrecks, awesome sight as there is some big boys out there. Pretty sure seen the odd ytk as well as some thumping yumbo crays on the wrecks.
Dolphin scuba is diving on the wreck at 58m on sat morning so might pay to stear clear. got some spots left on the boat if anyone is keen. give callum a call
Insert humerous comment here....

The sambo barges are all in
The sambo barges are all 100m - 110m.
The wrecks that Luke dives, none are over 65m, so probably no conflict.

I'm in. If my wife wasn't at a hens night on Saturday night I would join Ron for the night in one of the bays in near Rotto.
Up front, i will say I am very much a learning skipper so don't expect miracles, but I have one spot open, Goodz?
Also have to find some marks now to find these containers. I guess I could look for the other 3 dozen boats circling.
