BARGES - Shark update
A report for those thinking of jigging the wrecks at the back of Rotto.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Ended up having a jig at the barges yesterday after all my sambo spots in the 30's and 40's were barren. Interesting as these spots have held big fish this time of year for the past few years, this year just the odd rat and even they were absent yesterday.
So, against all good judgement, we headed to the barges to see if reports the sharks were not there (report by a tackle shop....not the most reliable source given they sell jigs......) were true.
Lots of samsbos, and big ones, but just as many sharks. We dropped a jig at a few of the main ones (North Barge, Outer Barge), sharked within a minute. Left as soon as we were sharked, and went onto a few other lessor known wrecks that are not on the maps.......sharks on all of them. Almost no chance of landing a fish.
This fishery is now stuffed, a complete waste of time unless you want to catch a shark, but bring big gear. My mate on PE6 fought one for 30 minutes, got a quick look at it before it just cruised away against full 16kg of Stella drag......
I hope charters are not still going out there. It will just result in lots of dead samson fish and a growing population of ever smarter sharks.

Hmmm I was going to give this a crack this summer for the first time. Seems like it might be a waste time. I assume the barges you are talking about are in the area South West of Rotto?

I'm surprised...
...DOF haven't already put a ban on sambo fishing this time of year. The shark problem has been going on for what, five years or something? As far as anyone knows, it IS a spawning aggregation so how many fish, and future generations of fish, have died over that time?

Dont have to shut down the whole sport, there's plenty of spots in 30-40m holding fish with no sharks all up and down the coast.

Good Post
John,
As above, have been following Sambo jigging for the last five years.
Not worth sacrificing a really good fish, to see it sharked as it slowly swims away.
As for the ban I think it's only a matter of time.

out there
Just going to put this out there and I know the responses already but as a point of discussion. Sambo fishing is obviously all about the jigging and the fight, but you already know what you are going to catch its just the size that varies. In my experience sharks go just as hard as sambo's if not harder, so why aren't we sports fishing the sharks?

I agree Adds
But we also know that even sharks get sharked. At least when you catch a shark you dont know what type, and perhaps targetting the sharks for a while might hopefully spook them away??
Wasnt there a post about doing this last year, go out there with big gear and targetting the sharks.

Adam - I think it is because slugging it out with a huge whaler that feels like you are hoisting up the barge from 110m is only fun for about the first 10 mins. Then you wish you'd never hooked the bastard!
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

I hooked one out there once
I hooked one out there once and actually thought I was snagged until I realised I'd drifted 400m from where I dropped. Ended up having to lock up the drag and drive the boat off and try and plane the prick up. He was seriously just sitting there. Thankfully after about 30mins of pain and swearing (and gaining almost no line at all) my leader gave way

Time to break out the 37kg
Time to break out the 37kg stand up gear and start tagging them with a smokey.
The sharks are beyond a joke in the north this time of year as well. Virtually impossable to bottom fish with the numbers as thick as they are.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

The number of these buggers
The number of these buggers are getting progressively worse, whether its down here or up north. It cant be good for any fishery to have so many captured fish taken by these bloody pests. Whats the answer, professional shark fishing boats ?

I like Adams comment
To the young at heart (and body) have a go at targeting the sharks, who knows what you may pull up from that depth.
Just a thought if you are not on the right side of 65 forget it, don't even go there in your wildest dreams.

Ads, my Deckie Matt (the wrong side of 50 but still goes pretty hard) fought a rather large shark for 30-40 minutes.....got a breid glimpse before it cruised off under 16 kg of Stella drag.......ended up busting off as the old fella looked like blowing a poofer valve.....haha.
No fun at all on a jig rod. Maybe 37kg mono with full harness?

hook the bastards on 37KG,
hook the bastards on 37KG, the combo will work out probably cheaper than a good PE5 combo anyway, hook up and drive away from them and get a more appropriate angle on the line and have some fun tagging some sharks!
has the art of catching something on line class died? i'm sorry i can't see the difference in the end when it's 50/50 of a Sambo or Shark, you're not keeping them so if it's the fight you can get that easy if you need, can't see the point of fighting the grey coats for something you're not keeping, jesus us northerners move on bloody quickly when they set in when bottom fishing so why do it losing $30 jigs every drop and wasting a good fish?

there are heaps of spots for sambos in close.. 30m
we found 2 new spots that are holding massive numbers of sambos on Saturday

Catching sharks is no fun unless it's the beach, it's just like a dead weight
My new 8k stella against a shark had me in pains very quick once almost locked lol

Yeah, on the way in we came
Yeah, on the way in we came across a huge school of sambos, ambers and a few kingies in 30m schooling near the surface, caught and released nunerous fish in a mad 30 minutes, but they were all sub 10kg. None of our usual spots held the bigger models.......maybe just timing????

Last time I fished the barges
I had just put new carbontex drag washers into the dogfight.
First drop. One hour and ten minutes later I got a 13ft whaler to the side of the boat for a looksee. It then powered back to the bottom and pulled the hook.
That was three years ago. Havent been back since.

Dam sharks
Stopped past there on friday and had three big tigers off the back of the boat after first drop. Had a crack with the TLD 50 with 150lb!!!
15 mins in we lost a few rod guides and it chewed through the wire shortly after....big shark, maybe 10ft.

Covered nearly 100 nautical miles the other day trying to get away from sharks!! They are rampant up out of Carnarvon at the moment!!!
had fun on some spinner sharks though!!! Those things go bloody hard and the performance would give a large marlin a run for its money!!!

Totally agree
Spinners are like mako's. Go absolutely freak out when hooked and IMO should be classed as a game fish.
A regular bottom spot had a 6ft resy spinner. I hooked it numerous times on BB gear but the spins as she went airial wrapped the leader around her body until it hit the braid, and goneski.
Upgraded to a wire trace to a long wind-on fluoro leader and when she finely hooked on it was a blast for sure. Went ape-shit, must have jumped about 20 times before tiring. Certainly tested the Stella10K but what a beautiful sound a screaming Stella drag is.
Havent hooked many billies as I didnt target them much but I dont think a billy would have gone that balastic. Almost jumped into the boat twice. Was awesome.
Sad thing is she was never there again. Was released and appeared to swim off nicely. I dont know whether she buggered off or carked it.
Over a year must have hooked her 10 times, but never after the final fight that we got her boat side did we see her again, despite trying heaps.

Spinners
When camped up at Jane Bay on Ningaloo station used to balloon out for spinners, never actually landed one but didn't stop me having 3-4 on every day to straighten the arms out. Good fun and great aerials for shore based sharks.
