Barotrauma and bulging eyes
Submitted by Alan James on Mon, 2010-05-03 17:38
I think we have all seen pics at one time or another with fish that have their eyes bulging from their head. Is this related to barotrauma or just another side effect of pulling a fish up from deep water or perhaps too fast? Can fish with bulging eyes be successfully released in waters less than say 100m deep with the use of a release weight?

Personally I would say no.
Personally I would say no. Wouldnt be expected to survive.
But I can guarentee that it definately wont survive if just turfed back over the side and not given any chance.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

Sure, there are cases of
Sure, there are cases of tagged dhufish coming up and looking totally shagged and being successfully recaptured - and they're a bad candidate.

The fisheries believe so !
The fisheries believe so !
Personally I think some species will survive and some wont ,but their best chance is to be returned to the bottom ASAP on a release weight .

Swim Bladder
Should you pop the swim bladder? They seem to swim off pretty quick once you do but does it do them any harm?

Do you know how to do it?
If not you may as well fillet it for bait. Are you talking the swim bladder or the stomach that comes out the mouth from time to time.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?![](http://fishwrecked.com/sites/all/libraries/fckeditor/editor/images/smiley/msn/tounge_smile.gif)

Its promoted in some fisheries but its a bit tricky compared to just using a release weight.

i have a rule on our boat
if you bring a fish up a bit to fast and it has bad eyes ect.We send it straight back down on the rig. Then bring it up extra slow by which time everything is ready to go.We dont even take alot of the fish we release out of the water.More fish are damaged by lifting and the handling in the boat than anything else.We have had fish free swim back after being bought back up slowly. If they live or not is then beyond my control but we will have given it a far better chance than it had if we didnt do it.Baldies can be a different story if the have their guts out the mouth. We were talking about this today and came to the conclusion(not marine researchers by any means)that between us we think that baldies from deeper water seem to suffer the most.

Good Info There Allrounder
So when a fish with 'bad eyes' is sent back down and then brought up slowly does it still have 'bad eyes'.

sometimes all gone bar a few bubbles
but always better than the first time up.Only need to do it from time to time and mostly small small fish that feel like weed or another rig. Most the crew i take out are very competent anglers or they dont come.We bring it up slow from the start and most dont even require the weight. From time to time they bob up then the weight comes out.

Sorry Dont Agree I know
Sorry Dont Agree
I know your intentions are good allrounder ,so please dont take this as an attack.
If the fish is undersize or unwanted and going to be released ,why put it through another accent .....to then release ?
The remedy for baratrauma ,bends ,narcosis .........is pressure !
Surely its better to return to the bottom on the release weight the first time ?

if you have it ready
in hand at the side of the boat Yes.First is best.As you will well know it is not normally that straight forward. If everyone is busy it is the best chance the fish has in my opinion. So what i was saying is that it is better than having it flap around on the deck or beside the boat while you get ready to release.
