How far north are you going?
How far north are you going? Barra can be quiet and feed less in the cooler dry season months. In the Kununurra
area keep river, i have been successful on the barra, sootie grunter, tarpon etc in the fresh water miles inland in the
skinny shallow water with deeper pools close by, the barra seem to be sunning them selves for a bit of warmth and
would take small flies, lures etc. Keep an eye out for the salt crocs as it is surprising where and how far inland they
can be, we came across one up cape york peninsula way that was ten km from water near a dry creek bed in the
shade of a fresh water mangrove tree just patiently waiting for the next wet season!. He was healthy as could be.
Diggers rest in the Wyndham area in the shallow lagoons using live pop eyed mullet where the water warms up is a
good area in the cooler months. There is some awesome camping spots up there ! Have a great trip with your boys
cheers.

Thank you very much for the info we are hoping to only head up as far as port headland ish inland or coastally exploring so this will be helpful, any further north to explore with the family we might need a bit more time than the 2 weeks holidays,
Am i dreaming of getting Barra in the middle of the year that far south?

Don't really like your
Don't really like your chances of Barra during that time of the year, especially only heading as far as Hedland, I have caught Barra during the winter months as they still have to feed but they were in really poor condition one 68cm fish I got only weighed 2.5kg, bugger all rain the last couple of seasons so inland won't really be an option for your Barra unless we get some really good rain this season

Telegraph pool
Nice spot on the Fitzroy. Float a little poddy around the rocks there. You could also look up Slims Barra charters in Broome too

Probably being a bit hopeful
As you say, probably being a bit hopeful that far south in the middle of winter. Plenty of good barra between Dampier and north of Hedland when things start to warm up.

balla balla
If you can extend a bit further than Hedland, Port Smith is an awesome spot, you have places like Balla Balla and Cape Croyden before that but for comfort and nice country Port smith is the go(book a site now or will miss out), Also Pardoo but need a bit of knowledge of tides etc to really catch fish.
You would be very lucky to see a Barra but plenty of salmon, mulloway and jacks. If you have a boat and can get outside all the bottom fish and mackies are around.

40mile camp
A good quik night pullover spot along the way for $10p/n p/v camping is 40mile (40mile south of Karratha) Can camp right on the water, good views and has long drop dunny's.
Like the other fellas said, your chances of a mid year barra is slim in Hedland. Went up to Kunna's with Hairy Dog's fishing camp a coupla years back in late September and the Barra had only just come on the chew the week before. If you can trek up to Broome head out for a day catching Sails, went out on the Billistic in Sep and was a unreal day catching Sails and Cobia.
Camps 8 book we bought recently
Give a man to fish and he'll eat for a day, Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in his boat and drink all day...
