Barra or Mangrove Jack Fish Tank

Hey Guys,

Does anyone know where you can get Barra or Mangrove Jack for fishtanks? and whether you need any special setups or just standard tropical water fish tank setup

Cheers,

Sheldon

You will need a very big tank for either one.  They also have to be kept away from other fish.

I had both barra and a jack

Sat, 2010-02-13 11:04

I had both barra and a jack in my fishtank. I set it up as a normal freshwater then changed it to full saltwater. i I got rid of the barra as they were growing too quick, You need a very big tank for either of these species. The barra you can get almost every fish shop or the fremantle tafe. The jacks are pretty rare to find and if you do find one expect to pay a couple hundred for one.

If your not very experienced in keeping fish then i would go down south and catch some redfin. They are aggressive like jacks and are really hardy...

I got a little barra from

I got a little barra from Poincianna nursery in Karratha LIA.  Only $15 and he is now a fat little "tennis ball with fins"

They had been raised on fish pellets, so very easy to feed, but he much prefers live prawns, fish pieces or catch a few moths at night time around your outdoor lights.

The jacks usually live in

Sat, 2010-02-13 11:41

The jacks usually live in fresh/brackish water when they are smaller and once they reach around 30cm or so they usually head out to full salt hence why they catch them in offshore reefs. They grow to 9kg and have a long life span so be prepared to have them for a while. They keep growing regardless of tank size as with all marine fish. They also very aggressive and will kill anything in the tank regardless of size.

to tell you the truth, I think you're going to struggle to find one in perth. Might be able to order them in from QLD but is quite a hassle. If i were you i would grab a few redfin for the 4ft, they dont grow as big, easy to look after (wont even need a heater), hardy and of course the cost nothing to get.

I had a 600l 5ft for my jack but even that was too small, minimum size would be 6x2x2 900L IMO.

If you need any other info feel free to pm me.

jacks

We have a pet jack at work and he's got character, much more so than the barra (mind you, we don't have them individualised)  I'd go the jack for sure, mind you, the barra feeding is pretty damn cool as well.  Will try and get a vid for you.

4ft wouldn't last you very

4ft wouldn't last you very long for either fish mate - they'll stunt temporarily but will eventually die

it's a sad thing to see an overgrown fish in an undersized tank anyway
