Hi Guys, Can anyone tell me best place in WA to go catch Barracouta and what bait/lures do you guys use in these waters to catch Barracouta.

Cheers

I am reffering to a Barracouta not a Barracuda

Mon, 2010-07-05 11:27

Is the water not to warm up north for Barracouta's, In South Africa these fish known as Snoek are mostly found in the cold water's around Cape Town.

Maybe...

Mon, 2010-07-05 12:45

...you are referring to what we here in southern WA know as a pike or snook? They are smaller members of the barracuda family...I may have it back to front but the shorter/stumpier ones with the yellow fins, typically reaching up to 45 cm or so are SNOOK while the longer/thinner ones (up to over a metre long) are PIKE.

Anchoring and berleying on inshore lumps at night and baitcasting whole ganged mulies will get you a pike. You are also likely to get snapper and tailor doing this, and some pretty big ones at that. Both pike and snook also like soft plastics, and they LOVE metals and minnows slowly trolled (less than 2 knots) over shallow weed beds, like in Cockburn Sound.

Trolling larger minnows, like Laser Pros and Rapala CD's/X-Raps, over the Five Fathom Bank will also get the bigger pike.

Have a fish called the Barracouta. I am not certain whether it is the same fish here called Snook or Pike. They do look similar.

Are you trying to get some smoked snook?

These are Snook, caught up

Mon, 2010-07-05 16:45

These are Snook, caught up and down the south coast. Quite common in Cockbourn sound. Quite a few smaller ones are caught from the rock groins. This one was caught at hamelin bay trawling a mulie behind the boat.

Have caught them upto 1.2m long.

Snoek is a Barracouta

Tue, 2010-07-06 19:43

I eventualy found some info on google. Best I could do to show a picture, see attached site. Accoding to google these fish are mostly in the very southern hemisphere like , south Australia, Sothern tip of Africa and New Zealand.

To us South Africans this fish is one of the best, espesially on the barbie with Butter, lemon juice and black pepper. The part you do not eat you can mix with apricot jam in a pan the next morning. This is seriously deliscious.

Cheers

In NZ they are considered a pest

Tue, 2010-07-06 20:09

as they attack anything that shines and inflict large losses on jigging gear and others.  The flesh is often worm ridden but when cooked the worms die, but perhaps this is a little off putting for those that know.  As a consequence they are seldom kept in NZ but do make good bait for various species.  Here is another site for you to check out.  Come on Saturday. Wink

Cool, thanks for that Alan

On the rugby, well I am not so keen on that as I am on fishing but now I know the ranking. What will happen if South Africa wins. Will they get top spot. History has shown that they can not hold that spot for very long but who knows, maybe times have changed.

One thing I know for a Fact, We did host the world cup soccer but be definately can't play Soccer.

Cheers

Rugby Rankings

Wed, 2010-07-07 20:40

There is obviously a formula to assess form / ranking of one country to another, given the two decimal place rankings.  How that works or is structured I don't know.  History has also shown that the ABs peak between Rugby World Cups, which is a sense of amusement to others and very painful one for AB supporters.

Your SA soccer team and the NZ All Whites (doesn't that sound pussy) I think are in the same league.  So are the Boks and the ABs, just a different level.

I think the AB's should have the tri nations sewn up (pains me to say it) Hosea Gear scores a hat trick against Ireland for the Maori and can't get a starting berth with the AB's... that's depth.

C'mon the Wallabies and fingers crossed the hairy back sheila's try and play positive rugby for once

Yea, you're dead right there

Wed, 2010-07-07 21:14

Yea, you're dead right there mate. At least the rugby guys are in a decent league. Dit you here about the Occy that predicted the wins of the Dutch. Last night he got into the Spain box. He has been right throughout the world cup with his predictions. Wonder how spain will do later this evening. Will be interesting if the Occy gets the whole world cup prediction right. If that happens I guess all aquariums will change to see water ones with occy's in them.  Must maybe try this technique on the lottery????

Then I can buy me a nice big boat so I can load my JetSki on it as well.

Yip as they said, only Bakkied Botha knows what goes on in his head.
Turning point of the game, from then onwards the Boks where beaten fair and square by a better team.

cheers

Bakkied Botha

Sun, 2010-07-11 10:49

I see he has now been cited for dangerous play for the head butt.  I'm thinking he may have a bit more time on the sideline coming to ponder his indiscretions.

I think congrats are in order, Bakkies Botha needs to retire, he screwed up the boks game as he so often does with dirty play. No recovery after that. His attitude got a pay back. AB deserve the win as they played a good game. Maybe next time, Cheers.

Another one this coming Saturday

Mon, 2010-07-12 08:27

Maybe this time for the Boks.  You will be without the services of Bakkies Botha as he received a nine week suspension.  I think that's pretty harsh but I don't know the history.  From what you say it sounds like he's in the same league as AFL's Barry Hall.

Yea, good suspention, should have been nine years. If there is one Bok that is always in the middle of crap its him. A lot of South Africans like him, he does play well from time to time but I am not one of his fans.
