BCF squid

anyone got the new 2kg blocks of squid from BCF? Seem a lot bigger than the Lund boxes but maybe not as fresh?

You'll know it's fresh if it's nice and white

I used to work for a bait wholesaler in my younger day. Basically all squid is imported in the 5lb (2.27kg) boxes most of it coming from California. At Compleat Angler I've purchased it in 1kg boxes which I prefer as I still take 2 fishing but can leave one in a dry spot in the esky frozen in case we bag out early and I can then take it home with little impact on the freshness.

You may have noticed that the arrow squid in the 200g and 1kg bags commonly sold in service stations is a pinkish brown in comparison to the nice white squid in the boxes.  The bagged squid is simply thawed by the local suppliers and repacked into their own branded bags. It's during this process that the squid goes pink.

Last year my mate and I were fishing in Exmouth and were impressed by the size of the squid in the Lunds boxes until we got down a couple of layers then the standard smaller size was the norm. The boxes either get top dressed with the larger squid for market or for some strange reason they miraculously float to the top of the box due to density reasons.....
