First NZ Trout

Managed to nail my first NZ trout whilst touring the south island during the past 3 weeks.
Caught at Lake Moeraki on dusk and went around 53cm, not huge by NZ standards but I was stoked none the less. Cooked up a treat in the barby. Followed it up with a slightly smaller model the following morning, this one released. Both caught on soft plastic, Berkey Gulp 3 inch minnow in Watermelon Pearl on a Nitro 1/8 jig head. If you haven't done NZ yet, get it on your bucket list, an amazing place and the scenery will blow your mind.

No hunting Big John, more a sight seeing holiday with the missus, and to catch up with an old school mate who moved there after he married a kiwi.

Would love to spend some time in the hills around my mates place, plenty of red deer and also a few chamois, he usually spends a weekend out there with his son every 3 or four weeks.

Missus and I also did a couple of fishing charters, one out of Moeraki and one out of Kaikoura, caught plenty of blue cod, sea perch and tarakihi, all great eating.

South Island, NZ

Wed, 2016-05-04 17:33

Pleased to hear you are enjoying your holiday to the South Island and well done on the fishing excursions.  After living almost 30 years in the North Island and never having visited the South Is I moved to WA in 1980. It wasn't until 18 months ago that I did my first trip to the South Is and it blew me away, obsolutely stunning.  Hope to return again sometime.

No complaints

Wed, 2016-05-04 19:01

No complaints from me with respect to the food and wine Andy.  We found some great country pubs with superb food.  I wanted to stop at every bridge to spot trout and the wife wanted to stop at every bakery.

If you get the opportunity Saint check out Arrowtown.

Ha ha yep same here exactly Alan. Every bridge I was telling the boys there'd be good trout down there. And they offer to butter your muffins when you buy one at the bakeries lol. How's that for good country service.

In the July school holidays to see the snow. I'm feeling cold already. My cousin reckons he'll get me out for some Blue Cod,we'll see.

It's a beautiful spot alright.

Gotta agree ALL the food over

Thu, 2016-05-05 06:55

Gotta agree ALL the food over there was excellent, and pretty well priced compared with Perth. Found plenty of  very good red wines too. And I hear what you are saying about continually stopping to spot big trout in the rivers. Alan, we did visit Arrowtown and just as all the autumn leaves were changing, almost felt like a trip back in time. The highlight was probably Milford Sound including the drive in and out, but the whole island was stunning. Oh, and should also mention that the Kiwis are a fantastic mob, always keen for a chat , very friendly and helpful.

Unfortunately didn’t get all

Thu, 2016-05-05 12:07

Unfortunately didn’t get all the way to Akaroa Sea-Kem, we did head out that way one afternoon but ran out of time (we had head back to pick someone up). We did get as far as that pub, if it’s the one on the left as you head towards Akaroa, but it was shut, on a Wednesday afternoon !

Something to see when I go back, and going back is a definite…………
