Beach fishing - Gutters
Submitted by Griffo84 on Thu, 2012-12-13 11:46
G'day everyone,
Can anyone please give me a few tips on how to locate gutters along a sandy beach. I live in Singleton and have fished the beach there plenty of times chasing mulloway with no real luck. Do you walk out waste deep until there is a considerable drop off or do you mainly study how the waves are breaking? Sometimes if its an onshore breeze the water can be quite messy which makes it a little more difficult to suss out what's going on. Also how deep/big does a gutter have to be to take an interest to it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ben

Look for
areas that the wave breaks (on the sand bank offshore) and then reforms and breaks again on the shore line. The bit in the middle is your gutter.

I should add
if you can find where the gutter goes out to sea ( i normally look for rips and dirty water going straight out ) i have found alot of fish including mulloway hang around there in search of the baitfish and other things getting sucked out of the gutter.

Thanks for the info Grunter.
Thanks for the info Grunter. I should now be in with a better chance of catching the ellusive mulloway!!
Cudbfishn - Cheers for the invite but I'm working up north at Barrow Island over xmas. Good luck Sunday night! One other thing, my parents have ocean views along Foreshore drive in Singleton and I often see professional fishing boats cruising parallel with the shore line about 200m offshore. I have tried to look at what they are doing with a telescope and they are pulling pots of some sort. Do you know if they are fishing for blue mannas or crays? I'm thinking blue mannas because I don't think there would be reef so close to Singleton beach? What ever they are catching they must do alrite because they keep returning to the same spot.
Cheers,
Ben

Down here on the south coast
Down here on the south coast gutters are easy to spot, they are normally close to shore, dark deep water with no waves breaking and running parallel to shore and run into a hole through which they empty out.....
In my experience they fish better than holes as they are natural highways for the fish to cruise looking for food
