Is there much to worry about heading out there in a 24 ft bass straight? And what's the fishing like of course. Does the weather have to be near on perfect to get out there or is it reasonably safe.
One has to remember that its 29nm to Koks island and a fraction shorter to the gap between Bernier and Dorre islands and if the sea breeze is up you are in for a rough ride home. The seas inside the islands can be real nasty as there is no swell and can be up to 2 metres in no time. If you are considering going out through the gap on spring tides with anything over 2 metre swell running forget it. The inside of the islands are always an option if the breeze comes up with baldies inhabitting the coral reefs in close . When the sea breeze cranks up earlier than expected it pays to steam down the inside of the islands towards White Beach on Dorre island then head home from there, giving you a more comfortable ride back with the sea on you back quarter.
The fishing both inside and outside the islands can be excellent and also shithouse depending on tides and time of the year. Best times for pink snapper are from May through to the end of July, mackies from mid May to the end of August all the other stuff is nearly year round.
Depending on what time of the year, you have to keep an eye out for whales, we have heard of a few collissions this year and heaps of near misses
those three islands in my opinion provide probably the best fishing in the world ive caught just about everything you could ever want to catch there and more
Your right black gen. They are a long way offshore, you need a lot of fuel and the weaher to be just right. Cant just zip home when you are 30 nm offshore. exxy or cb for mind.
I have been fishing these islands for the past 12 years and the fishing can be unbelievably good .. . or bad.
Once you are out there, baldies (big ones) in close on the ocean side and plenty of mackeral and tuna. Good pinkies north of Koks and for the past couple of years the fishing on the inside has been bloody good with plenty of pinkies, black snapper and cod. having said that I've had days when Ive struggled to find a keeper. I've done OK, sort of, out deep on reds and pearl perch but the sharks can be a nuisance. There is also a new boat ramp with fish cleaning facilities next to it.
But heed what Carnarvonite says, the trip out and back in anything other than great weather can be an absolute bitch. Its a long way and it can get bloody rough. I have a 23 Cruise Craft and when the wind picks up I'm down to 15 knots or less which makes it a 2 hour trip banging all the way.
Its a big trip over and spending 7 days fishing can also add up to a hefty fuel bill. There is some sense in what others have commented on in travelling further to Coral Bay and Exmouth where there are a few more options should the weather not be right. Good Luck !
cocks always take the easy option, especially the ones that like Pubs.
Bernier and Dorrie are great islands and from commercial fishing days, A long time back, there is great fishing to be had all round. Bottom bouncing, jigging lures and even fly fishing the shallows can be very rewarding. It pays to do overnighters to make the journey worth it's while.
Best thing is to pay Lamby and Seaquest a visut down at Dunsborough, they get plenty of fish every time they go out and they don't travel as near as half the distance we do.
Do you see them coming up here to fish and besides if you break down here I have to organise a tow in for you, when there is heaps of boats out fishing down south that will give you a hand. You have to keep your wits about you down there too because some bugger will be looking to ping your spots while up here there is plenty of ground for everyone. [though, sadly, it does happen]
we're heading just a bit further north to the blow holes at end of may. primariky trolling and botton bouncing, but i believe the beach lauch really restrict the boat size.
Go for it mate. Around that time of year the wether is mostly on your side. A boat like yours should be made for the job. Fishing options are endless. Pretty poor form for a few locals trying to put you off. It's out there's for all.

Just got back from
Just got back from islands..... Everything from the bottom got sharked!!! Bloody sharks everywhere....
BUT.... On a positive note.... Had a ball flicking lures at the tiger sharks, and hooking up the cobia that were hanging around behind them!!!!
sh.t load of tuna around... Tony had an awesome fight with a few decent ones!!!!
lost a LOT of jigs/lures, and then snapped my 100Lb finnor jig rod... Was an expensive trip for not much fillet reward...
awesome fun.... But yeah.... A lot of sharks.... Even when moving to a new spot..
