Best leader

After I  lost good fish after having the leader bitten through on the weekend I am on the lookout for strong, abrasion resistant leader. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks Colin Hay

Staal, I was using 80lb Penn Ultimate, but I will definately be going up to something a bit heavier, with better abrassion resistance. PS. The link node keeps coming back to this page.
Dean,How stiff is the schnieder? I would like something that has enough stiffness to help keep droppers, but it not so stiff that it makes it hard to tie knotts when you are bouncing around on the way to the next spot.

Yep, we have lost fish using the jinkai and black magic before. And had dhuies come up and the line is chafed all over.

Colin the schnieder is a bit harder to tie as it isn't as supple, but is the best line i have used for abrasion resistance. Can tie droppers without a problem. If you get yourself a rig bag and make up say 5 rigs before you go out, You should be fine for the whole trip.

Colin i use 100lb big game

Tue, 2008-09-30 13:02

Colin i use 100lb big game for leader ,and 150lb for my rigs ,and do not often get cut off .This line is not expensive . I use the three way swivels and big game pulls up nice and tight on the knots.

Some great info there. I should have read that before I went out on the weekend. Bet you're looking forward to your trip out with Andy.

With Dean

I must admit I liked the schneider for bottom bouncing in Perth, abrasion resistence very good and knot tying not too bad.  I also liked that its memory didn't always leave bends in the line (unless you fully bent it)  Anything over 110lb in schneider sucks for knots, more a crimping job.  I moved away from schneider up here because once you hook terra firma, its bloody hard to bust off!!

I only use 80lb Black magic

Tue, 2008-09-30 14:40

NOt sure what bit you off but if it was a SHARK then it really does not matter what you use. I figure that no DHuie or Snapper is going to bite through 80lb and any heavier makes my rigs look shit. I used to use 60lb but did find I was busting it off a bit too often.

New leader every 3rd trip

New leader every 3rd trip and new rig and hooks every trip this way you know there is no nics that can go snap.

100lb Cajun

Tue, 2008-09-30 14:46

The red stuff, is what I have just started using at the moment, but have previously used 100lb Penn 10x as a good cheap alternative. Both tie good knots and are pretty good at abrasion resistance. I have noticed my catch rate has declined a little though since switching to the Cajun line, but that has come at the same time as my deckies catch rates have declined too, so I don't think its the line, just my mojo.

Cheers

I use the Penn 10x stuff...

Tue, 2008-09-30 14:51

I use the Penn 10x stuff... and carry the whole range of leaders.

40lb, 50lb, 60lb, 80lb, 100lb, 150lb.

Since i only fish lightish line classes i tend not to overkill on leader stength. As the main line will be first to go.

But heres a tip for those who get lots of snags on the bottom.... Put some rubber bans inbetween your sinker and your leader (Pannanoska rig)

Also this is the best setup for using plastic baits deep see when drifting too quick for jig heads :) Your sinker stays close to the bottom, but your plastics bounce up and down.

This also saves the sore arms from jigging all day long@!

I think its Paternoster

Tue, 2008-09-30 15:17

I think its Paternoster unless Paternoksa is the Ruskie version? Wink

I tend to use a lighter trace for my sinker from the bottom swivel, that way if it hangs up, I can usually just bust it off.

Leader

On light gear i use black magic, but for bottom bouncing on heavier gear i use 80lb schnieder. Really easy to tie knots with.I tryed the heavier black magic (80lb) but it was no where near as good as the schnieder for knots.

The most important thing is

Tue, 2008-09-30 20:00

The most important thing is no matter what leader you use is to run your finger down to the hook every time you bring it up. The little leather jackets and wrasse will hit the line and nick it, especialy if you use those lumo squids on the line.

I believe this is the single most common reason you line breaks thru on that big fish.

I will cut off and change leader often on most days due to wear above the hook.

That said I have lost big dhuies to chaff thru on brand new leaders. I will never, ever, use Black Magic Supple again. I have no such problems with the Black Magic Hard.

I use Jinkai for most of my shorebased rigs.

Tue, 2008-09-30 20:11

I guess a harder version would be a good option for offshore fishing.
I tried a wind on leader for casting lures off the rocks and beach, but found that after a lot of casts the join started to unravel. For boat work that wouldn't be a problem I guess.

The jinkai plus is supposed

Tue, 2008-09-30 20:13

The jinkai plus is supposed to be good, more clear and stiffer than the normal.

I see a lot of people tying and extra 2-5m of leaderline above their paternoster (basically like a wind on) matt, what do you think re the extra stretch and feeling the bites?

Wind on

Tue, 2008-09-30 20:20

You must be doing something wrong Colin, I use wind on's for everything, casting poppers, lures, marlin, bottom fishing, squid, you name it and have no probs. Just make sure you get your tag line nice n close otherwise you'll be catching on your guides casting, if the fish aren't biting, you'll have great fun untangling the braid knots or watching your lures sail off into the sunset! :)

I was using it to throw out heavy metal lures Adam

Tue, 2008-09-30 20:24

It didn't seem to be the tag end that was the problem, more the binding..
Might have been a bad leader. It was the cheapest one in the shop.

no one has mentioned using flourocarbon as leader? Easy to tie knots with up to 100lb or so.....much more abrasion resistant than nylon.....athough Snchieder is like fencing wire......and FC is less visible under water.....I know it is more expensive.....but when you look at the considerable cost of getting onto a trophy fish.....(boat/charter/fuel/rod/reel/braid ...etc)....I recon using the best possible leader and terminals is well and truly justified....... Anyway, I'm currently using Seaguar 220lb FC, Yo Zuri 130LB FC, Xzoga 100lb FC, Stren 60lb FC, Black Magic 30lb FC. I crimp the 220lb stuff and use a uni knot or a series of half hitches for the rest

half hitch leader knot

me!

Wed, 2008-10-01 09:36

I'm also off using supple trace lines regardless of the brands and use;

80lb Jinkai Plus for driftbaiting/inshore snapper

120LB  Jinkai Plus for bottom patternoster fish

80lb Sufix Fluro-carbon for drifting-Big KG's

150lb Penn 10X for deepwater Ruby/grey banded cod etc

Schnider is a great trace line, strong & good abbrassion resistence but too stiff for my liking.

Light trace lines can get get chewed throught by Dhufish and if you get a double header of any big fish it can scissor snap that lighter trace line also!

Good thread

Wed, 2008-10-01 10:24

I've always used Jinkai - great for nots, but it's probably too soft for the stand outs. Will have to get my handsa on some Schneider and see how that goes. I always check my patanosta rigs each time and replace them, or the stand outs if I have any doubt.

Some good info in here.

A timely thread in my experience.

Went out Monday and only had two decent hits (using Ockta jigs), got slammed and busted off both times. I was using 50lb braid with an 80lb leader and I got bricked before I had time to really react. Thinking something (Baldie, Dhuie?) coming out of a cave and doing a smash and grab on the jig, the line was then rubbed through on the reef.

I reckon that I will go up to at least 100lb from now on.
