The best tasting fish in WA

OK, probably done before but as your tastebuds mature, maybe things change? Baldy has always tasted best for my tastebuds. Me mate got a good Sand Flathead from 40mtrs yesty, (600mm)I got an OK Baldy from 10mtrs (500mm)

We both did seperate side by side cook offs of both species, Flatty just snuck in there being the best, what do you reckon is the best fish, taste wise?

I was lucky enough to get a few spango's in kalbarri one of my faves
I really enjoy yellow tail kingfish or mulloway in a curry
And the humble black bream in bread crumbs
Few different ones there from the usual dermersals, spose it comes down to how you cook it cause i wouldnt be wasting bald or dhu fillets to a curry

My favourite is still calamari dont no if this counts though

Blackarse

Mon, 2017-02-20 16:02

I would have to say either blackarse or coral trout for demersals and yellowfin whiting or flounder for table fish.

While i enjoy dhuie i personally think its over rated and if blackarse grew bigger then id be targeting those.

Too difficult to call I think. KG Whiting up there, Shark Bay pinkie on the bbq 30 minutes after being caught, Dhu, Threadfin Salmon etc. Fresher the better obviously.

A mate of mine prefers Skippy and Sambo over Dhuie! I guess taste buds differ.

Probly Nanygai then baldies. KG's in the smaller fish dept and reds up north, but sometimes I'll settle for a plate of really fresh herring

I remember back in my high school days

Mon, 2017-02-20 16:19

My mates mum would love it when we brought back flatties from a swan river session!

I find it hard to narrow to one but Robson sea bream have been a recent favourite of mine (left the dhuies, pinkies, emporer's and rankins in the freezer for dead). I remember Nanny's being tasty but haven't eaten one for a good while now. Baldies are always up there too.

nannies, baldies , C trout, mangrove jack, pinkies, flatties, sandies and FLounder blackarse

all excellent

overrated Dhu rather eat herring  and KG

best fish ever

Mangrove jack caught while working on barrow isalnd - no fishing company policy

equal to that a barramundi cod probably the best fish i ever ate- again caught against company policy

stolen fruit tastes better

underrated if u know how to cook Au salmon and sambo

green job fish also a honorable mention and red emperor

Sand whiting for sure and its a kids favourite too

Mon, 2017-02-20 16:32

Next in line Nannygai, Baldie, Grey band cod, Rankin, Red Emperor, Mangrove Jack, coral trout and the list continues.

As Barcelona mentioned deep sea fishes are good, but IMO our regular demersals are even better.

Also completely forgot to mention Wahoo & Narrow barred mackerel are fantastic on the BBQ or smoked. Very versatile fish IMO.

Cheers

In Karratha they certainly weren't shit fish and the best beer batter fish ever.
Best tasting though between any whiting and OMG a Robinson Seabream is dead set awesome.
Just wish you could target them as they are almost incidentals.

Whiting...

Mon, 2017-02-20 23:48

Haven't tried all fish mentioned above so can't comment on some of them....yet!

I reckon it depends alot on how its cooked.  Some of you might remember me trying out dhufish for the fish time a few weeks ago.  Steamed Dhu taste great. However, when its fried, its normal. As in same as other "meaty" fish.  So if I bought Dhu at $60-$80 a kilo and fried it, I would think its a waste of money.  Just my opinion.

Now if I was to choose my favourite, I would rate skippy very highly if eaten on the boat, sashimi style!   Big sand whiting and KG would be my pick for best all rounder!

Tue, 2017-02-21 12:14

Sand whiting is the sweetest meat in the ocean that I’ve tried. Of the demersals I’d have to say baldy is my favourite that I’ve tried out of dhufish, pinkies and black arse.

Also love fresh herring fillets salt and pepper floured and then in an egg wash with a squirt of mayo and then into bread crumbs with some paprika and dried dill and into very hot oil for a minute or two either side.

Wed, 2017-02-22 09:05

I'm a big fan of Dhu. I find it freezes a lot better than other fish, and it doesn't matter too much if you over cook it a bit.

Some of the other fish taste really good when they're fresh, but then go a bit mushy if you freeze them for too long or over cook them.
