Tinny advice

Looking to buy a 3.5 or 3.7 meter tinny and was wondering which brand members rate. Will be using it up north for close inshore fishing such as Exmouth and Shark Bay. Stability is an important factor as I often fly fish so need to stand up. I am prepared to sacrifice some ride for stability as we only venture out on calm waters.

Had a look at the Quintrex Explorer,  Quintrex Dart, Makocraft Topper Tracker and Seajay Nomad. Currently leaning towards the Seajay as they seem to get good reviews. Although, save for the Dart, they all seem to have a very similar hull.  Will pop a 4 stroke 15 or 20 hp on it depending on the size.

Any advice?

Rivets no go

I don't know too much about all the tinny brands but did have a Bluefin a while ago for the top of a camper. I will say that if it's for a car top, beware of the hulls that are rivited as the ratchet straps put loads on the rivits and stretch them. This causes them to loosen, leak and vibrate. Fully welded hulls are the go..

Ive got a 3.70 Quintrex dart

Sun, 2017-02-12 18:58

Ive got a 3.70 Quintrex dart that's an awesome deep hull tinny, used it outside the reef in Warroora etc, around the closer islands in Esperance etc. Wouldnt say its super stable compared to a punt style tinny but easy enough to stand up in. I brought it to fish out in deeper waters, rather than inshore and also go on my cruiser roof. Runs a 15HP Merc 2 stroke, plenty of power for myself and my son but could do with a 20HP if running with 2 or 3 adults.

Dart

Sun, 2017-02-19 12:55

Oh man I had a 370 dart too - was a terrific little dinghy. I fished it from little boat harbour in Bremer all the way up to outside the reef at Coral bay. Me and a mate could stand up in it alright in Cockburn sound when chasing snapper in about a 12 knot breeze. Used to scurf behind it in the swan with me and 2 of my mates at the back to try and keep the wake up haha.

Had a 15hp merc which pushed me and a mate with fishing gear to 21knots WOT.

Would have preferred a little deeper sides (for the choppy days) but otherwise it did fit the bill perfectly.

 What about a Quintrex

Sun, 2017-02-12 20:27

What about a Quintrex hornet? They are super stable, can handle some chop and great with a casting deck

I think the smallest size is probably 4m tho.

I had a Bluefin 3.6m and rated it highly. Was very stable and wide for its size. Weighed a few hundred KGs all up.

 I Currently have a Quintrex

Sun, 2017-02-19 12:42

I Currently have a Quintrex F390 - 2016 - Fighter hul - very impressed with the sabilty at rest and cuts the water very nicely - with the Suzuki DF20A 4 stroke and 10' prop with proper purpose built hydrofoil - it will do 21.2 knts at WOT

The fuel burn rate is absolutley astounding - i have never had an outboard that ypou can run continuosely for over 14hrs including plenty commute sections - chasing bream, mulloway, tailor in the Peel inlet - then put in $12.68 to fill the 22 liter tank. Two men at 100kgs + and marine battery, 22ltre fuel tank, esy full of ice and drinks, more tacle than BCF and she will still pul 19kts at WOT. And very stable at rest - gresat for throughing soft plastics - hardbody lures....has the latest 4DVchirp Garmin plotter and sounder.

Is for sale if your keen - PM me and will send some picks through.

 +1 for the 4m Hornet....

I know any boat there is always pros and cons, if you can somehow up your max size then this will be the top all rounder for both inshore and outwidish fishing.

Just my opinion of course.

Got a 3.75 Mako Topper

Mon, 2017-02-20 08:48

Got a 3.75 Mako Topper tracker nice and stable at rest and handles the slop up here in Broome well, as with most tinnies it needs a bit of weight up front but easily solved with an esky (Amplimesh floor up front to keep the weight down but holds the esky down flat). I run a 15 yank built merc with forward and reverse on the throttle, great for trolling
