Best Tides - Dampier
Submitted by Fozz on Fri, 2012-09-14 08:34
Heading up to Dampier the week after next for a weeks fishing/diving. We have spring tides & will be fishing out wide, is it better to fish the bottom or top of the tide chasing bottom dwellers? Any guidance will help, its been a while since I've fished up there.
Cheers Fozz

hey Fozz,
I have been using the lunar calandar lately and it seems to be a bit more reliable than the tides.

Other than that I have always worked on the hour leading up to high tide for the best fishing. Others may give you a better idea than I can, but at least you have something to go on now :-)
Good luck when you get up here mate, hopefully they are biting for you.

Hi Mr Fozzman
You havent been on here for awhile.
But agree 2hrs to high and 1 hr afterwards the best. But also dont forget the same with the bottom, but not as hot as the top.
Changed over the yrs here, and base the tides more on whether I can get in our out. Bit off an old fart now so gentlemans hrs. I hate lining up (which might get better when the new finger at HHYC is complete) so I go out/come in when I dont have to line up. And we still score fish during any time. Its just that the run can make it difficult holding/getting to the bottom in some areas, but out wide not an issue.
Snapper, Reds, Chinaman tides paly a part. Coral trout no way. They hit a target whenever it happens past their snout. More opportunist than grazing time IMO.
My ideal fishing up here would be -- BB 3hrs at tide change with a flaoter balloon out the back. Then move on to SP chucking them at bombies or any likely CT country. Troll between these spots. Also squid is an option bewteen tides.
Yesterday classic. Busy in the morning so arrived at jetty after high. Went squidding and got a feed (and bait). Tried for some CT but no joy. Then 2hrs before low till home BB and got all sorts. Trolled between spots for a few little Sharkies and a queenie. No S.macks and none on the floater, just fuggen sharks. Good day and wish I had the GoPro sussed. Might have been fun to laugh as I caught a full load of facial ink from a squid cleverer than me!!!!
As for Ryangler -- The Patch (inner and outer) is/was a popular spot for a BB just to the North of Rosemary. It has been pressure over the years, but still fishes OK. Its just there are better spots, but you have to find them.

The Patch:
just found it on my phone, navionics 20 24.38s 116 37.83e It is no secret spot, there is usually half a dozen boats working it. Works best for mackies on the bigger tides. There will be sharks, so dont piss fart around for too long landing your fish. Some nice cobia around too at times. wack on a couple laser pros with wire trace and go for it.
