Big Angry Fish - A Call from Milan

Received a call from Milan from Big Angry Fish this morning to discuss burley and other things.  What a top bloke to give me a call from NZ in the middle of filming duties for the next series.

Milan provided some very helpful insights into his burley fishing techniques.  An amazing fact was that he and Nathan typically use in excess of 40kg of burley per day on their trips.  He has put me in touch with their manufacturer/supplier in NZ so we can discuss options for improving our fish based burley offering in WA.  I will provide any updates on this through our web site and blog/facebook pages.

Another thing he mentioned was the value of releasing cubed pilchards for the burley trail.  In this respect I have chased down a supply of pilchard “thirds” and because we have a fish processing licence we can potentially produce packs of pilchard “cubes”.  Is this something that people would be interested in, and if so what size packs would be best?

We will shortly be playing burley related episodes of Big Angry Fish in our Showroom.  Don’t forget the show is on 7mate on Sundays, just before Ryan’s excellent offering.  What better way to spend the day when the wind is up than watching these two quality shows.

No Fashion Tips

Tue, 2016-03-01 13:32

The wife reckons my fashion sense is about the same as his!  The socks are the things that get me, and I still remember them from the first series in 2012.

Another interesting fact was his "take" on people complaining about the cost of burley.  "You spend $100k+ on a boat, spend heaps on rods and gear, use heaps of fuel, cover all the costs of insurance etc, get a suitable tow vehicle and then not take enough burley to do the job properly.  It is a fail at the last hurdle, which is getting the fish around your boat because you don't want to spend of a fraction of the cost of the other stuff".  I have edited out the colourful language, as I am sure they need to do a bit with the show.  He really is an interesting character.

I noticed that their burley logs look about 5kg each.

No wonder they get so many fish around the boat. They pump a hell-load of burley.

That is brilliant that they contacted you directly.

Depending on the price I reckon pilchard "thirds" would be a great idea.

Cubes

Tue, 2016-03-01 13:37

I'd buy cubes in 1kg and 2kg packs. If you need more can always take more packs. I have some ideas for this kind of fishing that I will be trying.

If you've ever seen pics of the old Rampage that shark fished out of Sydney they used to go through hundreds of kgs a day. Literally a boat full of mulies to cut up.

When I fished with the Page brothers it was usually filled with boxes of mullet. I fished with them on their 35 Bertram. Maybe they went more upmarket when they bought the 45.

Have to get the recorder ready to go earlier than FWA and have a squizz, aside from that, I rarely watch free to air.

Yep 1kg bags of cube or diced 3rds would be perfect. Cheaper then the top grade stuff and don't have to chop them up on a rocking boat!

Pretty cool to chat with those boys about it

Tue, 2016-03-01 14:30

Good for Rays. I only use very small amounts regular. If going for pinks or mully. 1 mullie every 5 to 10 mins. Other wise. All unwanted guests appear.:):)

Tue, 2016-03-01 19:56

Cubed packs is definitely something I would buy.

I recon 2.5kg and 5kg bags would be popular sizes.

Yea love the show but the socks always make me shake my head. Sometimes the moaning, groaning and puffing gets a bit much at times !!

The popularity of this show is demonstrated by the FW members response. How good was them pulling the piss out of each other while grappling with monster kingies?!!

Burley Bombs

Tue, 2016-03-01 23:01

5kg packs of cubed pilchards would be good.
I use old offal chunked up into a 20lt bucket with holes drilled, weight in bottom and another bucket with 70m of rope for getting it down into 50m.
This premium burley option would be great for spearo's.
Let me know if it happens.

Hey Mick

Thu, 2016-03-03 13:19

I usually buy 2 x 2kg packs of pilchards for a snapper sesh (One for bait and one to cube up)

Just a little more of the burley cubes would be perfect..... I vote with Krusty for 2.5kg size for pre-cubed  :)

Bring on the bug angry fush!

I spent a lot of time snapper

Thu, 2016-03-03 22:14

I spent a lot of time snapper fishing where burley is so important.

Having a bag of cubed mulies would be absolutely spot on! All my big snapper have come from cubing mulies down stream with an unweighted mulie snelled as bait.

Just remember as little johnny mentioned, too much and you attract lot's of unwanted rays. I've learnt that the hard way but in NZ that's not as much of a problem.
