Big bitey close to home!

Media Release Large great white shark seen in Warnbro Sound Date: Tuesday, 30 October 2007

Sightings of a large shark, which may have been attracted by schooling pink snapper in Warnbro Sound, have raised concerns for water users in the area.

Department of Fisheries Regional Manager, Metropolitan, Tony Cappelluti said the report of a couple of sightings in recent days came from a commercial fisherman and was considered to be very reliable.

“The fisherman says he saw a great white shark that was around five to six metres long and, on both occasions, it was seen at the southern end of Warnbro Sound,” Mr Cappelluti said.

“No one knows for sure if it is the same shark, but we have two sightings, not far from the water ski take-off area, so we must warn people of the potential of this one, or other sharks, being attracted to the area by spawning fish.”

Mr Cappelluti said it was important to get the message of caution out to people who use the area for various activities.

“We understand the shark was seen within 100 metres of the beach,” he said.

“The Department of Fisheries is continuing to monitor the situation.

“Shark sightings should be reported to the Water Police on 9442 8600.”

Some precautions to reduce the risk of shark attack are to:
  • swim between the flags at patrolled beaches;
  • avoid time in the water around dusk and dawn, when there may be an increased risk of shark attack;
  • avoid areas where there are large schools of fish, or other potential shark prey, such as seals;
  • avoid areas where animal, human or fish waste enter the water;
  • avoid deep-water channels or drop-offs nearby;
  • do not remain in the water with bleeding wounds; and
  • if you see a shark, leave the water quickly and calmly. Avoid excessive splashing or noise.

thinking it may have been near the tyre wreck. there has been snapper ther for a while now spawning.  the commercial crabbers have been out for a while now. just a lil scarey hearing how close it was now to swimmers. i know we cant live in fear but  seems t be happeing a lil more freaquently now.

Confidence game

Wed, 2007-10-31 19:24

I must admit I haven't dived before or seen a shark shield in action.

Like a lot of things in fishing and for that matter, life in general, anything that makes you feel more confident though is a good thing.

Never seen a white

Wed, 2007-10-31 19:38

Never seen a white in the flesh but have seen the damage big bronzies can do. Years ago at Kalbarri had an estimated 35kg yellowfin bitten in half with one clean bite. Gets the mind racing when your in a 14foot stacer at the time.

it works!

Wed, 2007-10-31 19:49

Mike, it'll cover you but if a dive buddy was close enough that'll deter also....wouldn't guarantee but....get ya own imo ($699 approx)

As for the comments "it wouldn't help"......I disagree. If the sharks in ambush mode, they'll have their snozzer electro field sensors running full on so any buzz from the Shark Shield will send off tiny ripples before the shark gets close enough. "If it's just a comfort blanket thing", why do most all commercial divers use it, keeping in mind they dont like dying????

The Shark Shield incorporates two electrodes, which project the field from the unit and thus create an invisible protective shield that surrounds the user. Both electrodes must be immersed in the water in order to give protection to the wearer.

The field generated by the Shark Shield is detected by the shark through its sensory receptors known as the Ampullae of Lorenzini, situated on the snout of all predator sharks. The initial discomfort increases if the sharks approach the transmitter until it becomes intolerable. The sharks then veer away and leave the immediate area.

The Shark Shield uses technology invented by the Natal Sharks Board of South Africa. This technology has been used for the last 7 years by commercial and recreational divers around the world. Not one diver has been taken when using the shark shield. The guy that did die wasn't using it to the books criterea.....stupid!

Work

Wed, 2007-10-31 21:21

Gribbo's shark shield seems to be doing a good job of protecting him. I'm starting to become his second head when diving these days. We had a school of white tips between 1.5m and 3m getting pretty inquisitive last dive, but a quick drop of the shark shield in front of their noses made them move on. (not that they do much apart from try and take your catch)

As for the price vs the one thats going to take you that you don't see anyway, jury's still out on that one for mine.

Yean i like your comments on

Thu, 2007-11-01 07:01

Yean i like your comments on that one adam. Ive heard they work when throwen over the side of ya boat while fishing up north, stops the sharks eating everything you pull up. Hpwever the last time i checked great whites dont come standard with ABS and well they are full tilt swimming to bite you i cant see them pulling up at the last minute......even if theres a shark sheild!. But hey if i wnet more in the water id be thinking of one.

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

misconception

Thu, 2007-11-01 12:29

It's a big misconception on how the shield works. If the sharks charging at you at speed it's already locked onto you and it's spent it's time eyeing you off as they do....your a gonna. It's rare that any big shark just comes out of the blue to attack you, it's what you think but doesn't happen. They're smarter than that, they approach and sound you out through their snozzer before you see them.

So, the shield emites a field and whilst its say 5m, the ripple effect works out further. This in turn is the first stage in detering the big shark from coming closer and closer....yes it's been proven. The commercial diver that died left his sheild "off", then turned it "on" at the last minute when a great white surounded him. He didn't use the Shark Shield correctly and the outcome of the "death enquiry" was if he had used it properly and had the bloody thing on he wouldn't of died. The long disepating ripples will alert them and proven if they still  "persist" they take off as soon as they break the sheild anyway!

Yes always variables but all these people cant be wrong and "not one death" (ca-ching)

yeah well, nothing is fail

Thu, 2007-11-01 18:08

yeah well, nothing is fail proof.. but id say that if thats the stats of the shark shield, the odds of you being taken by a shark are significantly less than if didnt have one. Thats enough reason to use it.

The price? Well, i would defintily buy it if i was going to be in the water often and in territory which is known and is hazardous for shark attacks or shark feeding activity.

Been down there all morning. Lotsa boats cruisin arround looking for it. Spotter plane and helo's, ranger up and down the beach telling everyone to stay out of the water.
I was standing knee deep in the water fishing and he comes up and tells me I could be in danger.
Maybe it was the big berley slick I had going that concerned him
