Big Day for the Kiwis

The America's Cup is done and dusted after the disappointment of four years ago.. Well done Team Emirates NZ.
Hopefully the Aussies can scrape a few dollars together for the next one.

Quite so and there were several Aussies on the Team Oracle boat. There is clearly the sailing talent in Aus to support an Aussie team. Just need the financial support.

Two of the Aussies on the American boat were Perth locals and one each on the Swedish and Japanese. 10 Aussies in the event out of a possible 36 crew across 6 boats. Certainly the talent is available, just need to find someone to throw $100m at a realistic challenge.

Americas Cup? That's not even a 12m event anymore isn't it?

Not sure whether your comment was tongue in cheek Dale however you are correct that the 2017 America's Cup was not contested by 12m monohull boats. I guess if you don't have foxtel sports or a interest in sailing or don't have an interest based on patriotic reasons you could be excused for not knowing the 2017 America's Cup has been contested in Bermuda over the last month. The boats were 50 ft catarmans with fixed wings sail arrangements similar in design to aircraft wings. These generate a lot of power and the boats lift up and ride on foils rather than the cat hulls. These high tech cats can achieve speeds far greater than the oncourse wind speed. Speeds in excess of 40knts and closer to 50 knts were being achieved at times and this makes the event more appealing from a spectator perspective.

Hi Alan, yeah I've got the whole Foxtel, but didn't know it was on, so didn't look for it. I don't watch yacht stuff as a rule. But well done to NZ for winning it.

To manpower all the sails and hydraulics without any machine IMO is amazing. Those sailors aren't just sailors anymore. Have to be super fit.

The "Grinders" on the US boat
The "Grinders" on the US boat (with 5 Aussies on it) and the cyclors on ththe Kiwi boat (with one Aussie on it) were purely there to generate hydraulic pressure as the wing and foils all operate on hydraulics. The Kiwi boat didn't have a winch on it. The wing was controlled by an Xbox controller, and as foil automation isn't legal, they got around that by having a computer telling the, the best setting and a bloke on the hydro controls following the computer.
The helmsman of the Kiwi boat is the youngest ever to win it. Last year he was world champion in two seperate classes as well as Olympic gold medalist.
In 2013 the lost because they didn't continue to develop, it didn't happen again.

And the 12m ruling was extremely loosely calculated.
I didn't like the move away from monohulls but matchracing with these marvels of modern engineering has a definate attraction.

Well done Kiwis
Technology is advancing so fast, wasn't that long ago and the Maori's would be in a dug out canoe scaring off competitors with the Haka. I used to race multi hulls, I take my hat off and bow in respect

Fox 507 is still showing
Fox 507 is still showing highlights. I personally booked today off and was up at 0100 to watch the racing. It was bloody sensational, particularly after they were 8-1 up in 2013 and managed to lose.
Boats sailing at 38 knots in 8 knots of wind and doing 40+ in 12 knots.
Looking forward to sleeping now.

New Zealand is the first
New Zealand is the first challenger to successfully challenge in 166 years. Adds to the wow.

Excuse me
Just where did that come from, my memory (yes I admit is not as good as it used to be) seems to recall a bloke from Perth named Allan Bond was the first person to take the Americas cup away from the Americans.
I think that with the development of the super cats this type of yacht racing has moved into the hi-tech yacht racing that equals the formula 1 racing cars in design and engineering, (if you know what I mean)
Being a baby boomer my heart is still with the mono hulls. The first cat I ever saw was a Yvonne (think that's how it is spelt) which have gone the way of the dinosaur now, they were heavy bruits of things. First yacht I raced was a VJ. then a lazy E, then after a rather nasty encounter with the Timmarare on it's way to Rottnest I gave yachting up well racing anyway.
Anyway good on the Kiwis for there win in such a convincing manner and in such a hi-tech boat.
