ah nah mate 7.2 not that rare biggest I've seen was 23lbs so 15.8lbs isn't that out of the ordinary, I ment metro, very wide spread and hard to find this year, heard SW got one of the best arguably better than last, but not metro sadly man

Well

Wed, 2017-05-31 11:51

well I dunno if u knew this but the wa salmon reaches a max size of 24lbs, 110cms, and 12 years of age. How is it hard to believe a fish was caught near its max size? Fish like dhufish, snapper, gt, kg whiting and many more have been caught up to and even over there stated max size, so why would it be impossible for a salmon? As I said the biggest I've seen was 23lbs, 108cms long, 3 years ago at peron, blew my mind too, cheers

world "club record". Do u realy thing majority of peeps would got through the huge prosses to finalise it? I don't think so either, that's like saying the snapper record is 17kgs like it states on igfa, even though they have been caught up to 21kgs in both wa and south oz. they are club records not the record of the biggest ever caught, well not for the wa salmon atleast.

Not that difficult

Wed, 2017-05-31 12:44

Apart from being a member of a game fishing club, it's not that difficult to apply for a state, Australian or world record.  Just get it weighed officially, supply your rig for inspection, and fill out some paperwork.

The challenging part is catching them on a line class that is lower breaking strain than the weight of the fish!!  At 7.2 kg your fish would break the current Australian all-tackle record, but it would have to be caught on 6kg or lighter line class to qualify. Most of the current Australian record fish on 1, 2, 3 and 4kg line are between 5-6kg.

All Tackle Records

Wed, 2017-05-31 13:41

It was my understanding that in the case of All Tackle Records the line strength can exceed the weight of the fish as long as the line strength is less than 60kgs or 130lb.  Whilst the the fish in question may not satisfy the line class requirements it would more than likely have been caught on line less than 60g breaking strain so it would imo qualify within the All Tackle Class subject to rig inspection etc.

Not quite right

Wed, 2017-05-31 14:11

State and Australian records have always required that the fish weigh at least the equal to the line class on which it was caught.  IGFA World Records until recently did not have this requirement, so you could submit a claim for any size fish on any line class.  Now for line class up to 10kg it has to weigh at least 50% of the line class breaking strain, and for above 10kg it has to be equal or greater than the line class.

That's a stonking salmon.  The reason I ask about length is that it's often a more reliable indicator of weight than using scales of unknown quality and accuracy.

Spent many years on professional salmon teams and over that time have handled literally tens of thousands of salmon, the biggest of which would not have gone much over 8kg so I am pretty sceptical of your measurements and weights

True

Wed, 2017-06-07 11:31

true well I understand that a lot of people do give false measurements, but I'm not one of them man, I've seen them a lot bigger and it's not rare for me, I am yet to even catch a salmon under 75cms and 4kgs which is weird but I dunno I just don't encounter the smaller ones, unless were talking about the 20cm ones around rocko I've caught tooo many of those! But as others have said it happens, and just coz u did commercial fishing for them doesn't mean I'm wrong at all, just like this person I spoke to saying he commercial fished for snapper for 15 years or so, and the biggest he ever got was 12kgs, does than mean every snapper caught over that from regular folk is a false measurement? I get what u mean tho, but as I said, why would I lie about a salmon? Cheers

Smaller salmon

Wed, 2017-06-07 15:09

Stationed at Bunker bay, our turn to pick on what school of fish we wanted to net, spotted a good size school coming down from the Rocky Point end of the beach that we estimated at approx 3 tonne and another travelling from middle reef heading towards Rocky point approx. 2 tonne. Being like most fishermen we chose the bigger school and if they joined up then we could have the lot.

To our surprise the two schools passed right through each other and continued on. When we had the net around our selected school we found they were all about 1-2kg fish while the next team in line netted the other school which were normal size of around 4-5kg fish.

Going on fish weights, we would freeze whole fish and later cut them into cutlets with a band saw, some we counted 13-14 mulies inside then which would have added another 1-1 1/2kg to its weight if weighed as whole fish

Interesting

Wed, 2017-06-07 18:01

true sounds interesting a school of 1-2kg at bunker bay! Didn't know pre spawn running salmon came that far north! And weird they didn't get eaten by the normal sized ones! yeh probably that's a lot of mulies! Aha. But once again, this salmon was as I said a big one, and I've legit never caught a spawn run fish under 75cms strangely, and biggest I've landed was around 8kgs from dawesville cut last year, and every other salmon I got there last year was over 80cms, some looked a lot bigger in the water as well! Then one at palm jetty a month ago that some one had caught looked huge! I mean it was so big I couldn't believe it was even a salmon! Was as fat as the guys leg who caught it! And easily 90cms but was just extremely thick and fat. I just don't see how it's rare and is why it confuses me when people say a 7 or 8kg is bullshit? It's not! Aha, and I don't know about the mulie thing with the one we got in the photo coz it's stomach was empty when we gutted it, didn't even get to swallow the live herring we got it on, was just a good size salmon, cheers man...

Length vs weight data

Thu, 2017-06-08 13:40

PGFC members catch and release/tag hundreds of salmon every year.  We also take measurements (photographed) on approved brag mats like Shimano or IGFA.  Some salmon are also weighed if the angler thinks it's close to a record.

We have collected length-to-weight data for various species, including salmon, that we routinely check against captured fish.

Some facts about salmon and sizes:

  • A 4kg fish will be about 66cm, a 5kg fish will be about 72cm, 6kg about 76cm.
  • All-tackle Australian record is 6.9kg.
  • Off all the current records, stretching back 30 years, there are exactly 6 that are over 6kg, and none 7kg or more.
  • The heaviest fish weighed or measured by any club member in the last 4 years (and possibly longer) in the metro area is 5.81kg.

I don't doubt the existence of much bigger fish, but in the metro area at least, to say that you've never caught a fish under 75cm goes against all the information that we have about salmon.

Based on those lengths and weights if the fish in the pic was in fact 82cm fork length it is more than likely a 7kg+ specimen.  A solid fish indeed.  Out of interest I have attempted to do some proportioning maths from the pic using the distance between the baitcaster handles as a reference.  We all know that taking measurements from photos and proportioning is never going to be exact but the results were interesting.  I don't know the model or dimensions of the baitcaster but based on the two I have at home the average distance between the handles is 87mm.  By my reckoning the nose to fork distance of the fish in the pic is approx. 9.35 x the distance between the baitcaster handles.  This puts the fork length at around 813mm.  To the doubters out there (and this is not aimed you resurgence) do you own maths.

Well I havnt

As I said, I don't see why, but I've never caught a migrating salmon under 75cms, doesn't matter what u have resurshed, I can put up a photo of it if u like, it was from dawesville cut in April this year, smallest I've ever caught, believe it or not! and no way is a 66cm salmon 4kgs unless your talking fork length, my 75 was bearly 4kgs, on the Mornington peninsula fishing page on FB they weighed a 66cm and a 69cm one and the biggest was 2.98kgs being the 69cm one, not 4! But as I said, those weights don't matter at all, they are club, not a basis for actual max size or even average size. Thanks man for them maths basically proved that the salmon is infact as big as I said and weighed 7.2kgs despite the haters, I legit cant understand why people are surprised and then trying to dispel it's size? It's not even a huge one compared to what I've seen! Maby u haters will catch a real salmon one day. Cheers fishos...

We caught salmon all around 70 cm mark for a solid hour . Pure boredem set in and I put a halco twisty on a handline and threw it as far as I could. Next thing I was holding a 98cm bull.

I think there may be something wrong with them scales? Or the measuring. 1m + and only 5kgs? From a fish very heavily built of almost all muscle? A 60cm one is around 2.5kgs, a 70cm around 3.5, a 80 around 5.5, 90 around 7, and 100 around 9 from my and other people's weighings. Even the fisheries say at 96cms fl they average 10kgs...Very interested in how yours only went 5?

I think your full of it to be quite honest, I've caught more fish than you can imagine, big ones, little ones, down south and up north, east and west. I lived a long time in the southwest, caught more salmon and let them go than you've had hot dinners. Big ones, little one and everything in between. So yes, I have a fair idea about how big they get and how much they weigh in at. Yes, been there, done that.

yeah cheers but u can't be serious? Wow u have caught more fish than me, dosent mean anything mate. Well it can in some circumstances, but not this one buddy. How on earth is a 1m salmon 5kgs, please do explain. Like seriously, unless it was malnourished, it's impossible, that's like saying a 1m snapper is 5kilos, or a 40cm bream is 500 grams.  Please go search up the wa undersea fishing club and check out there records, it's a wa fishing club I'm sure uve heard of them, and oh look, the salmon record is 5.94kgs, and wait, no way, it's 81cms total length and 74 to the fork! Picture and all, certified scales and all...Mate please do explain. And carnovite, how long was your 8kilo salmon u said u netted? Must have been 1.4m atleast by dales reasoning... Cheers fellas

Salmon

Thu, 2017-06-22 22:57

Dr Dominic Serventy (csiro) recorded one at 19 lbs near hopetoun

in the early 50's. An interesting quote :

' when Val (Edwards) was fishing the 13 mile * east of hopetoun), the

fisheries research men told him that one of their research vessels

in the great Australian Bight in 1948 travelled at 3 knots for 36 hours

through one school of salmon'

All species get big

Fri, 2017-06-23 18:54

In NZ they have the northern kahawai as well as the normal one. The record kahawai tipped the scales at 6.9kgs and 79cm fork length. The northern kahawai although rare is often caught in excess of 9kgs and quick resurch for any of u will see that same fact. The wa species is said to be the largest of them all, so would have to be able to get over 10 for that to be true.

Can I just say, this is sad, really... I post a fish I and my brother were prowed of, and peeps immediately call bs??? Trying to say this and that??? I've proved all of u wrong but it's just getting stupid now...as I just said to dale, the WA Undersea fishing clubs salmon record is 5.98kgs. So basically 6kgs. And is only 81cms long and 74cms to the fork. There's a picture of it next to a tape measure and was weighed with certified scales... so if a 74cm to the fork salmon was certified at 6kgs, how could a 82cm to the fork not be 7kgs??? It legit hurts my brain. Keep telling me I'm full of shit if u want, but alteast I know it's not me whose being the idiot. Have a great day people, really, what a way to enchorage fishing. Cheers

458italia - when you come on the forum and start calling people retarted (I think you meant retarded at the time but I'm happy to be corrected) over something that was obviously a joke, it can tend to rub people up the wrong way. So maybe be nicer and more humble and everyone will treat you the same. There's been other examples of things you've said, but they aren't jumping to mind and I don't feel like stalking your profile.  bro, what else am I supposed to do, everyone calling me a liar for apparently lying about a fish, then when I called them a liar they attack for accusing them of being one, then when I post a thread proving them wrong they tell me to stop and that why do I have to be right???!!! See how dumb that sounds? Please tell me carnovite, say u posted a fish u were prowed of, the people start implying your lying and don't know what your doing, despite not knowing you and just assuming your false, then u fight back proving it's size and saying there the ones in the wrong, for even more people to jump at u saying your wrong and there right, then posting something to prove them wrong again, then they see they were wrong and just tell u to give up and let it go? Seriously man, what would u do if u were accused of lying no matter what u said? Would it bother u at all? Cheers bro

Dale are u actually serious

Wed, 2017-06-28 20:12

bro...bro......bro, common. Are u for real right now? Read the entire thread, EVERY ONE BAR A FEW COMMENTS ARE IMPLYING IM A LIAR!!! And if u read the first comment I said on your comment, u will see, I didn't imply that at all! I was legit interested. Maby used the wrong wording at the start didn't know u would get so offended, but none the less, didn't imply that at all. Next minuet, YOUR INSULTING ME AND ONCE AGAIN CALLING ME A LIAR???!!!!!!!! And after that I get annoyed as well obviously. All good bro but seriously can't do that shiz and expect me or anyone to sit down, everyone else was already on my case, didn't need more of it, u would do that same thing if people were calling you a liar obviously as ur reacting to me apparently calling u one. Infact this entire thing is messed up, some people saying the don't get to a metre, others saying they don't get to 7kgs  others saying the get a metre but not 7kgs, others saying other things as we'll, no one seems to agree with each other, except on one thing, and that is no matter what I say regardless of there mixed opinions. I have to be lying!!! Cheers bro sorry if I offended u at the beguing didn't think my first comment was bad enough to get that reaction, and defidently didn't expect me saying the size of the salmon me brother got would get replies like "honestly your full of it" :( cheers bro have a good one, tight lines...../!

 well true that mate although

Wed, 2017-06-28 19:57

well true that mate although I'd u look at the most part if this thread, I say nothing negative at all (except one bit to my mate), then when people start implying "I'm the liar", it starts up to a point, and gets worse as more people say this and that. Maby a 1m salmon was only 5kgs, but as I was called a liar before I called him one, how in any way and I the bad one? Most posts were implying I'm wrong in various ways, didn't ask me about certain aspects that much at all, just straight up went for the I'm telling "bs" approach. So mate can I ask, how would u react to that? am I supposed to sit here and let it roll in, or defend my case? And please give me an example, I've posted 3 posts about this stupid salmon thread, all caused by various folk that had already charged me, so apart from them as that's not fair judgment, please go and find these "things I've said". And even if u did say something, why would people still draw hatred from it? This is a fishing forum, people say things, as they have to me, no big deal... if it is to u folk well I'm sorry, but ya gotta understand it can be a pain for me as well, so when u start the flames, expect to get put out after it. Cheers people... thanks for your support, next time I might put up a good fish I caught but call it only half the size it actually was to avoid being labeled a liar... and nah I ment retarted just sounds funnier to be honest be aha, cheers man

Brag Mat

Wed, 2017-06-28 20:25

Pays to stick your fish on a brag mat if you are going to quote a size or weight otherwise just put the pic up showing it off so others can have their own opinions on what it weighs, that way its going to save you getting hot under the collar about nothing

which rubbish u referring to tho?

Wed, 2017-06-28 22:21

Which rubbish are u referring to? The way I see it I posted a pic of the biggest salmon my brother has caught being prowed of him and it, and immediately people start accusing me of lying? So if your referring to me posting a large salmon, how is that rubbish? But if your referring to all that resulted from it, then I 100% agree...cheers bro

Did you just use a comma before a coordinating conjunction that links dissimilar clauses?
