The Big Trip!!
Submitted by barneyboy on Mon, 2010-03-29 20:38
Has anyone on here done the big trip around Australia. Does anyone have any tips, do,s or dont,s that might help with the trip.
We are slowly nutting things out and might eventually take off in november, heading south and going anti clockwise....most probably in a 4by with a rooftopper.
any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

couple of places in SA worth stopping
For the Sth Aus part of the trip, with a small tinnie there are still some great spots to get some good fish and easily, Streaky Bay is a definte, launch off the beach at the place known as the bushes, then if the water is murky about 2-3km out in 3m of water there areusually plenty of big kg's about. Surf beaches there are pretty good too for year round salmon and mulloway.
Its certainly on the plans to do a big oz trip...... one day.........

I used to work all over Eyre
I used to work all over Eyre Peninsula in SA and it's a awesome spot. Most people who drive east go straight from Ceduna to Pt Augusta but make sure you go via Pt Lincoln. It will add 300km to your trip (not a big deal when you're going all the way around). Stop and spend time in Coffin Bay, it will be great for your tinny. Also Ceduna is very underrated and under visited. If you decide to stop there PM me and I'll make sure you get into some fish. Dropping into Cactus Beach via Penong is also a must do.
As for camping on the Nullarbor, I've done it a lot and have never seen any trouble, I reckon you'd be safer than in most caravan parks!
Also, if the road is in good condition, go from Esperance and take the coast road east so you come out at Balladonia. Good country.
Over the years I've been all around Oz and would still rate the Eyre Peninsula, WA south coast and Exmouth/Pilbara as my favs and way better than any of the east coast. It's too busy over there but mind you, it's still very nice.

Took 6 months to get to
Took 6 months to get to Darwin from Perth and got stuck there for 4 years...so don't go to Darwin if you have plans.
Have fun; there is plenty to see out there...and take ya time. Main tip would be to time ya nothern part of the trip to be just after the run-off. Water falls in near full flow, plenty of fish and everything is green.
