BLACK LIGHT needed for a day

Hi all, this is a bit of a long shot but thought I would ask anyway.

I have been asked to do a science demonstration by my son’s school teacher. After talking to her about it we agreed to focus on health and hygiene.

I have a powder which we use at work that is used to check for contaminations etc and even though you cannot see it under white (normal) light but it glows under UV light.  The plan is to get the children to play with various colours of play-dough first with the powder in it and then show them what its like to play with dirty hands by using the light, then get them to wash their hands.  This will show that they do not wash their hands properly.  (all a bit of fun).

Then also demonstrate the power of a sneeze (by imitating a spray bottle as your nose) and spray it as you sneeze use the light to show how much it spreads.

Also other various experiements with the powder.

I was wondering if anybody has a black light that I could borrow for the day for this demonstration.  Preferably one the size of an average key board.  Woud prefer not to use one of those long tubed ones as they would be too big and prone to breaking.

I could go out and purchase one but for the sake of a single use its not worth it.

If anyone does have a black light – for those who do not know it’s a UV light source.  Its those that you see at the night clubs, or on that telemarketing channel at 3am.

I am not too sure if those UV lights that you have on the aquarium work, but to try it I will make my way to an aquarium shop to test.

The sort of UV light we have at work is the dangerous sort that kill bacteria, viruses and will cause skin cancer as such are not suitable in a school environment.

I am not sure of the date I would need it but would be looking maybe in July-August.

Please PM be if you do have one that I may possibly borrow in the near future.

I am in the Palmyra area.

Hi Michael,

I know you were preffering not to buy one but you can buy the bulbs at Bunnings for around

$10, they have a standard bayonet plug so you could easily use the wiring from a lamp or even

the cheap style automotive lamps also available at bunnings.

hope this helps.

Thanks Marty, will do that.

(and if the demo is popular and they want me to do it to other classes/grades at least  I have the equipment)

(I just did not want to get the fluoro tube sort as I would then need to get the housing etc).
