Very calm early

Thu, 2017-09-07 19:13

making drift fishing damned near impossible, every ultra slow drift was in a different direction and very little biting, I was 15nm sw of garden island .....sounder alight with fish but little feeding.  Peak bite time was 12 - 2pm, got one nice 700 dhuie at 12.30 then the NE wind got really strong out wide yet little when back at CPBA

Still one good fish better than drawing a blank

West Rotto

Thu, 2017-09-07 20:13

I went out at 5.30AM and fished around north end of GI with no success. Headed out west end of Rotto and spent 1 hour fighting a stingray and eventually won the battle. Around 11AM I got a 60cm pinky and a black-arse cod and heaps of wrasse. By lunch time I went for some sand whiting and flathead in 40m behind GI - not great size but filled up the fish esky a little. Hectares of herring (I think) in many schools on the surface in a frenzy but couldn't catch them. Back to the boat ramp by 3PM - so a long day with relatively minimal success but beautiful flat conditions out there. Came back in at 35 knots.

As Sunrise said, plenty of schools of fish on the finder but the only things biting were the wrasse today.

Chased western King wrasse all day for bait

Thu, 2017-09-07 21:20

And didn't see one, for the first time I had success using Sgt baker fillets for bait.  Before 2pm it was howling NE across the Sound but it only lasted 20 minutes and calm on shore...weird !
