They are very similar. The Bue Spot or Chinese Fottballer is plectropomus laevis and the common Coral Trout is plectropomus leopardus. There's a few more too that we get like the Bar Cheek or island Trout, plectropomus maculatus.
there is a few scientific names. But to make it easier to understand, all the various names are Coral trouts. So whether it is a barcheek, blue spot, footballer etc, they are still coral trout. There is some colour variation and I suspect that is where the confusion comes from.
All good mate. See the link to the report below. It has a side shot of the fish. Note the darker colours compared to a Leopard and the lighter bands. When smaller they are a brilliant yellow instead and also the pectoral fin is dark where on the Leopard trout they are translucent. Also the spots on the Leopard are smaller. I'll dig up some comparison pics of ones we ahve gotten over the years and make a post. Once you catch a few you can spot them a mile off.
Well, live and learn. I always thought that the footballer trout was black and yellow. Apparently not so, its more to do with the patterns on the fish rather than the colouration. Yes ?

As Bunny mentioned
there is a few scientific names. But to make it easier to understand, all the various names are Coral trouts. So whether it is a barcheek, blue spot, footballer etc, they are still coral trout. There is some colour variation and I suspect that is where the confusion comes from.
Straight from Wiki:
