I also hope the two missing are found safe and well.

Sadly, a Very topical event.   we're heading up with the boat in a couple of weeks.

Big swell down here, I'd imagine xl up there also.

Risky manoeuvre shooting the channel at night with swell.

Unfortunately these actions cost the lives of the two deceased.

Not the first time and probably not the last.

Swell was on the rise when we left left 2 days ago Boony, could see it smashing the reef in front of the homestead. Like you say risky manoeuvre at night with no lit channel markers.

Wed, 2020-06-17 12:28

Its hard to know circumstances and making assumptions at times like these doesn't help anybody but travelling at night in a smallish boat takes on a whole new risk...

Bad enough in the daylight when something goes pear shaped, must've been a fucking nightmare situation...

Does anyone know the age of the two no longer with us?

I wouldn't try that in the dark even if there was no swell. Liky Boony said we don't know the circumstances that put them there at 8.30 at night.

Always sad when this is the outcome.

Latest report says they were swamped at about 2pm. The survivors then had to swim 3km to shore and walk 6km to raise the alarm. Based on that clearly still light.

Oh fuck yep thats really shit... Strange to get clipped anywhere behind the reef really... Can anyone thats fished the area shed some light on what the country is like around the north passage?

Perhaps they had some sort of engine failure and ended up on the reef?

Good effort by the survivors getting to the beach and raising the alarm!!

Wed, 2020-06-17 21:03

Missus was questioning me about it considering we were just up that way. I said a boat that size does not go over in swell an chop, especially what was forecast up there. They had to have drifted onto the reef. Very sad indeed RIP and condolences to all involved.

north passage

Wed, 2020-06-17 21:07

 Very sad news indeed.

Having fished coral bay alot, I would almost bet they they have cut the corner at the entrance to north passage. You tend to get a few random sets that pick up and break on that and can be sketchy if you try head west too early.

Wed, 2020-06-17 22:00

Yeah thats what I was wondering...

Poor buggers, I wonder if they activated epirb before swimming?

The odds are stacked against you swimming from a boat even if its tits up...

I ran into trouble years ago up that way, after rowing all night ( just me and my missus ) we pulled up and basically waited for help as the current on the inside of the reef was taking us north quicker than we could row and make it to land...

They've done very well to swim 3kms!!

Bar Crusher, Surtees

Interesting that the boat was a Bar Crusher and a Surtees went down in Queensland a few weeks killing two people also. I suppose Mother Nature doesn't discriminate between vessels.

Newsfeed showed the boat being pulled up the C-Bay ramp. It had a rear water flap like the Bar Crusher/Surtees boats. Either way it's a shit thing to happen to anyone.

Time frame

A statement released by the family this morning revealed that the horror accident unfolded shortly after the couple, both in their 70s, and their youngest son Ryan and his partner Galina, left for a fishing trip about 1pm.

About 2pm outside Ningaloo Reef – just north of North Passage – “two huge waves hit” the group’s 6.1m boat “side-on”.

“All necessary safety equipment was onboard but was not accessible due to the sudden capsizing,” the family’s statement said.

“Bob and Jan were knocked unconscious and trapped underwater for a period of time.
After Ryan and his girlfriend Galina resurfaced, they found Mr and Mrs Oostryck’s bodies.

They tried desperately to resuscitate them for 20 to 30 minutes, “but were unsuccessful”
What followed was a long and dangerous 3km swim back to shore, with the young couple, both in their 30s, forced to spend hours in the water before arriving exhausted back on land.

“With the boat dangerously close to the reef, Ryan secured their bodies to the boat and made the difficult decision to leave and swim to safety,” the family said.

“They managed to recover two life jackets from the wreckage and swam for four hours to shore, arriving after sunset.

“They walked for another two-and-a-half hours until they found some campers on the beach who assisted them and drove to Coral Bay to raise the alarm.”

There has to be lessons learnt from these outcomes...

Why an EPIRB wasn't accessible could perhaps be one that should be looked at...

I understand fully being a surfer that a wave belting you will toss shit around but then a water activated EPIRB might be the answer...

 Why an EPIRB wasn't

Fri, 2020-06-19 06:55

Why an EPIRB wasn't accessible could perhaps be one that should be looked at..

Never a truer word spoken. Some may remember that I lost my Brother off Leeman a couple of years ago after we got a cray rope around the propeller and a wave landed in the back of the boat causing it to capsize. My EPIRB was located inside the cabin, at top deckhead. When upside down, this is the deepest part of the floating vessel and I could not duck dive deep enough to recover it. The upshot was that we were in the water, being smashed by the sea for 4 hours, I was within minutes of the end. Just so lucky that another boat happened along.

SO..... Site your EPIRB where you can get it if the boat is upside down!!

McLay

Fri, 2020-06-19 10:59

just saw footage of the boat. I have been seeing that boat here for years. I am pretty sure it is a McLay. About 8 years ago all the blue paint was falling off it but the next year it had been repainted.
