Boat Defence

I realise with another person currently missing of our coast, the timing might be not right, however on the other hand highligting ways we can protect ourselves and our boats is none more prevelant I beleive, what with boat/vehicle thefts also increasing.  We have been trialling a product we have had or a little while now, and would like to let all the FW community about it.

The BOAT DEFENCE is a series of Tracking, Tracing and Monitoring devices that comes in 3 models.

BD-TRACKER: A standalone IP67 battery operated device (batteries last 5 years) that simply screws to your boat or trailer, and allows you to track it live.  Create a boundary around it, and receive SMS/Email alerts if it moves.  Ideal for trailers, small boats etc

BD-MONITOR: A tiny device that can monitor your bilge pump/s, battery voltages, shore power connections and even door/hatch entry alerts.  Configure the device to be alerted on any condition, and track and trace live through Google maps.  Perfect for larger trailer boats, penned or moored vessels - even cars/trucks etc.

BD-OFFSHORE: Similar to the BD-Monitor, however when no mobile reception is received, the device automatically connects to the Iridium satellite network.  The IP67 device comes with the functionality of a panic alert to notify a mobile number of your choice.  Perfect for those you travel offshore and possibly out of mobile range.

All devices have back up batteries in case of failure, and can be tracked to the last known location.  An alert can also be sent if the internal battery does go low though.

As with numerous tracking devices out there, there are ongoing fees which we cannot avoid due to third party costs, however we have kept these as low as possible.  We have to charge a yearly fee to cover SIM/SMS/Software costs, however reduces by nearly half after the first year.  No contracts or monthly direct debits though.  We can do the install for you, and can configure all required alerts.

Please go to www.boatdefence.com.au to find out more and download the MONITOR's brochure.  Sorry about the quality of the website though, I made it up really quickly for temporary use until we get a new site made.  I understand most will have their own opnions, especially about cost etc, however after being stuck offshore myself in the past (only 9 miles but scary enough being dead in the drink on my own) and always worried about my boat getting towed away from my driveway, I beleive it gives real piece of mind, and the opportunity to track it, if some scumbag ever did take it!

Cheers, Nigel

getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

For the BD-Monitor RRP is $499 for device and includes 12mths access fees (no more to pay)

All 3 devices are designed and made in Perth/South Africa so quality and reliability is excellent. After sales support, spares etc are also local from us here at Endurance Marine in Fremantle. Although the devices are extremely easy to use and configure, we feel ensuring local support is very important if needed. R&I is also continually evolving with our partners so more innovative designs, technology and capabilities are continually evolving to ensure the devices are state of the art.

Get in contact with us, call or at for any questions. More than happy to discount price for FW members for Jun/July.

Due to various requests, we

Due to various requests, we have now introduced pay by the month on all 3 devices. 12 or 24 month plans are available.

Heading north or on that big trip?  We can also offer one off, weekly and monthly rates.  Instead of having to permanently connect the device, we are working to have the Monitor and Offshore devices available for you to simply plug into your cigarette lighter outlet on the boat.  This way you can drop by our workshop, pick up the device, plug it in and away you go.  All we need is to set up a few parameters (e.g. an emergency number for it to send alerts to).  When you get back just return it to us.

A couple of things you might not know:

The Monitor and Offshore devices have a built in capsize alarm.  White Knuckle Fever (The possible point of no return) starts at an approx 60 degrees list depending on conditions, hull etc, so we have the devices set to alarm at 65 degrees roll.  Heaven forbid if this ever did happen, but an instant alert is sent to the phone you designate notifying them of the alarm condition and a GPS location can be retrieved.  I understand most have all been in big swell, but a false alert riding a big wave or chop is better than none at all I believe.

The devices also register the last known GPS co-ordinates if the battery goes dead (eg submerged in water).  The device automatically sends GPS co-ordinates at an interval you request - This can be at any interval (eg 60 secs through to 30 minutes). If you know you are heading out far to those deep drops then have it set to register every 60 secs for instance.

These are only a few of the standard features and options available.

Our devices are in no way a fail-safe for proper planning, common sense and having all required safety devices (Log in/out, epirbs, jackets etc), however are there as a backup if anything was to go wrong to hopefully speed up recovery.  We hope to work with authorities and insurance agencies moving forward to make these more accessible and reduce overall costs.
