Boat Launching Question
Submitted by Swan River Fisher on Fri, 2012-01-20 15:52
Hi Fishwrecked
Just one question about launching our boat.
When we back the boat in the water and start to undo the winch, the boat flies out of control and slips very quickly off the roller trailer, and you just have to let it run because theres nothing you can do. We tried to fix it by backing the boat further in the water so there is less strain on the winch, which worked a bit but am not that keen in taking the car for a swim. Also tried tying a rope from the boat to the winch post but it got tangled and didnt work.
Most of the time i drive on/ off but when theres a jetty there i plan on using it.
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers SRF

I use a short piece of rope
It is tied to the bottom of the winch post.I run it straight up and threw the winch piont then around the top of the post and back around the other side of the rope.So all you have is a loop.Once you have undone the winch hook you just let go of the rope and it slides off.I also find if i leave the trailer a bit higher up the ramp the boat doesnt float off as fast as well.A bit hard with tidal surge in the mix as well though.
So tell me have you got your info from years on the water or hours on the internet?

aaaahhh true
gonna try that next time.
Edit: but i realised i wouldn't be able to get the rope off from where the winch hook attatches to the front of the boat unless im in the water..

The rope stays on the trailer
It just slips out of the loop on the boat.

Solution!
SRF, Ronstan do a Clam-Cleat that attaches to your stem post and allows a rope from boat to the stem post and once all the detatchments are done you just yank out the rope from the Clam-Cleat and off it rolls!

Nah....
......my boat stays on the rollers & skids after de-attaching.........just grab the rope after that and off it comes!
My mate uses the Clam Cleat and works a treat!

Lead rope
Put a couple of turns of yor lead rope around your winch post to hold the boat while you un do the chain and wire rope then allow it to slowly let the boat slide back down the trailer. Doing it by only having the rope in your hand will just rip it through your fingers, the couple of turns serves as a brake slowing it down

Or keep it in idle forward while your deckie unhooks it and then reverse off.

We do exactlly what
We do exactlly what carnvonite does with no trouble what so ever.
Wrap the bow to stern rope around the winch post 3-4 times(heavyier boat more wraps),loosen whinch so theres slack in the winch rope and undo the shackle, undo rope turns when ready.
Works first time evry time

yep same as me. A couple of half hitches around the post to take the weight off the winch line, then just pull the loops off the top and away she goes

Rollers
Even a bit more tension on your side rollers may fix it
