Boat Motor Mechanic or Dealer Recommendations - North of the River
Submitted by trueblue_10 on Fri, 2013-12-13 06:02
Need some recommendations of where I should get my 150HP 4 stroke Yamaha outboard on a 6.1 Quintrex serviced. Also happy to be advised of places to avoid due to past bad experiences.
It is my first boat so would rather not learn the hard way. I live near Darch.

You gotta be kidding
I can't think of anything positive to say about my recent experience with a 100hr service at all boats.
I will just leave it at this, bunch of amateurs claiming to be experts, I had to spend a day and $400 fixing 3 things they broke when they serviced my boat, never again and when questioned it was obvious from the start they could not give a rats and don't really know a great deal. A few others on here have had similar experience so I will let them chip in if they want. If anyone wants to know more pm me
other alternatives
i got my old boat serviced at boat city for the years I had it, never had any problems there although they probably prefer yamahahs being a yam dealer. My new boat has a Suzuki hence why I went to the nor dealer. Bought the replacement parts off Brett ward unfortunately sor but definitely knows his stuff about Suzuki

Concerned
I am pretty concerned Kempy. When I get time I am going to have to pull out my spark plugs and have a look and see if they actually changed them cos they did my oil but by the looks not my fuel filter, still paid for it to be done lol

I'll second Cameron at Waterline
Used him myself and know of a few others who use him. All have only positive things to say.

Sorry guys if I sound like a "old goat" but I find it hard these days to find anyone in a trade that takes Pride in there work ,it all seems to $$$ these days and dont get me wrong I can understand that you have to make a dollar but it just seems to me that its a " dash for cash"these days.
Story: Went to try and get cover for my BBQ the other day ,went into a fabrication place in joondalup ,asked for a cheap piece of galvanized sheet with a handle on it,
he said call you back in a day or so,
called back $250. said sorry not interested,my 3mm plat cost $500 and he wanted to charge me half the price just for a lid , DON'T THINK SO !

Just used Mike from Marine
Just used Mike from Marine Masters to do my boat last week. Based in Ballajura but is mobile and can come to you. Very satisfied and happy with his work. As a plus he was cheaper than any boat shop I called NOR for quotes.

Ill seccond that although
Ill seccond that although his name is mick
Factory trained on yamaha too
getting the bottom line final answer from a bunch of blokes that use false names and put smiley faces at the end of paragraphs is not the best place in the world to get the information you seek.

Oops. Mick then.Great bloke
Oops. Mick then.
Great bloke anyway and will run you through everyrhing he has done, keep any old replaced parts for you to inspect yourself. He even took photos to prove that he took the bottom leg off and replaced the impeller. Unlike one boat store didnt do for me two years ago.

Combined Marine.combined
Combined Marine.
combined marine are worth a shot. I used to service my boat at all boats, (mainly coz that's where I brought my boat new) and as far as I could tell they done a good job and come to the party when something went wrong (outboard mounted wrong and leaked into hull), but damn they know how to charge! So for a change I took a risk and took it to combined marine in Joondalup. I was very impressed, straight up honest guys who charge very fairly. My motor was making a funny noise (or so I thought, turned out to be a vibration at certain revs and I was just being over cautious). They checked it out and couldn't find anything, but I was sure something was up so I asked them to check again, so they did and still couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. I wasnt convinced and was a little frustrated by now so went in and had a look with them, sure enough they were rite and it was just a vibration through the hull at a certain rev range. Now after all that, me being a wanker 1st time customer and not listening to them, they still only charged me for the initial check up and left with the full diagnostic print out as well. After that I got them to service it and was a again happy with the service and price. So next service ill be taking it back to them!
That's my 2c anyway
