boat owners

to all the boat owners out there that leave their boat and trailer outside the house or on the lawn,do u guys lock it up in any way?as ive been seeing heaps of boats on front lawns etc and wonder, isnt anyone just gotta drive the whole lot away?makes me wonder ,is there anyway to lock it,if i do get a boat in the future, and i would have to leave it on the lawn as theres no space in the garage or somewhere that i can lock the gates up

We had our wall fall down so

Thu, 2010-03-11 18:29

We had our wall fall down so as we were building it with bricks my dad bout i think it was 5m of Stainless Steel Chain cost like $300 and we put about 3m of it wrapped around the frame of the wall and in the ground a bit too so now we just wrap the end around the trailer at the back and lock it up.

use the trailer locks

Thu, 2010-03-11 18:43

you can get soem good trailer locks that fit on the tow hitch. just make sure you either weld the bolt heads and nuts down or do somethign so light fingers cant replace the hitch. once had a guy try to take my boat from me front yard by trying that but i woke up and heard it, let the dog out and im sure he walking funny still. cops got him too. was a good laugh but i leave nothing in the boat to take

Boat security

Original Teenage, If you end up getting a boat, just make sure you take out anything of any interest to the pinheads that roam the streets late at night, my boat never comes out from the double gates until I'm ready to go in the morning , I also have 2 pretty noisy Kelpies that help as well.

Diehard, square chain is supposed to be fairly hard to get through, but I can say that if you have big enough bolt cutters, you will get through almost anything!!

theives

if the theives in question had an oxy in the back they would get thru anything i would imagine - heavy chain and hitch locks and loud dogs would be the best i reckon so its gonna take em a while to get all the locks off and buy that stage your awake and out the front with a air horn and a baseball bat

Ahh you can't even rely on

Ahh you can't even rely on emptying the boat. I had some assclowns try and climb into my boat by treading on the foil and they just snapped the fins off the motor.

got a canvas boat cover and completely strip everything out.

then I lock it with a tow hitch lock

only ever thing stolen was my fire extinguisher...and if I knew you took it I would repay the favour by throwing a molitov cocktail through a window cause if you gona take it you may as well use it.....Smile

they take extinguishers

Thu, 2010-03-11 20:32

because they are the powder type, so after they dump a stolen car they spray the interior and the powder "eats" all the plastics and cloth - no finger prints, dna: zip. The car is also a complete write-off as they can never get all the powder out and its not worth replacing the whole interior of a car.

Have my dads 5.8m ally in

Thu, 2010-03-11 19:47

Have my dads 5.8m ally in the front driveway. Had the same concerns and still have the concerns of some prick trying to steal it or getting in and having a looksee.

First of all i am very good friends with the two neighbour to my right and the one to the left. So i have three other households looking out for my boat whe i'm not home. Obviously this only helps.

2: I take EVERYTHING out of the boat. The only thing i leave in it is the carpet and the anchor rope. Even the anchors come out.

3: Got a trailer coupling lock, have the coupling welded to the trailer, remove the shackles(you can still tow a boat just by attaching the chains/shackles, not very efficiently but enough to steal it), apply the trailer brake(amazing how many people dont know about these)

4: Got a chain through one of the rear wheels and around the trailer. Spare wheel is padlocked.

5: Have a really heavy duty plastic coated segmented 'chain'(for motorbikes, CANNOT get through it with even BIG boltcutters, tried to when i thought i lost the key, found the key). Put it around the trailer to a ring concreted into my drive way.

6: When i know i am not going to be using the boat for a long time, cover the whole boat in a tarp and a myriad of ropes and straps all criss crossed to hold it down. Makes it difficult to get into(even with a knife).

Does all this make the boat unstealable?
No, but it does present someone who wants to steal it with alot of F*#king around, when only 200m down and around my street is another boat out the front with only a chain and padlock around a tree.

My theory is make it as much of a hassle to steal, and hopefully the strealers will look for an easier target.

On that though if i could keep it out the back behind locked gates or in a shed i would, but alas it doesnt fit under the carport!

True story

Fri, 2010-03-12 07:07

The facts are truly stanger than fiction - early one Sunday morning (and I mean earrly - around 6.00am) a couple were woken up by the sounds of a chain saw - "who the b hell would be running that at this time of day?" however it stopped fairly "shortly" thereafter with the final sound being a dull thunk and a car driving off at speed.

Back to sleep they went arising at their normal 8.00am or thereabouts.

After having breakfast the householder wandered to the front of the house and looked out the window - to see their pride and joy which was a NEAR NEW 6+ metre fibreglass boat chained to a pole in the front yard. It was still there but looking decidely shorter - by about a metre with both motors notable BY THEIR ABSENCE.

It seems that a ute had backed up to the boat positioning itself beneath the tilted motors and a man had jumped out with bolt cutters and a chain saw proceeding to severe the steering cables and then literally chainsawing off the rear of the boat which fell into the ute - they then drove off never to be seen again.

Apparently a bloke up the road witnessed much of what occurred but had only just got home from a very long and boozy night and thought he was dreaming.

Result = Boat - total loss

Ute - was stolen and subsequently burnt

You cannot stop a determined thief

Seen plenty of others as well so you might guess my profession.

A guy at Bias was telling us

Fri, 2010-03-12 08:39

A guy at Bias was telling us one day that he had a lock on the hitch and the theives just chained the boat to their car and drove off to a quiet spot when they then grinded the lock off.  All they wanted was the motor then they burnt his boat.

Now he uses the hitch lock, wheel locks and chains it up as well.

I have stainless steel cable

Fri, 2010-03-12 09:07

I have stainless steel cable as thick as a gorillas thumb.
looped through the wheels and frame of the trailer and locked to a fence pole on my Trophy when I had it.
As for whats in the boat, twice has flares and stuff pinched.
Now I keep all the expensive stuff off the boat and only the cheap basics on it. Also nothing like a few trebbles laying around in dark places for them to find if they put their hands in where it was not meant to be!
Oh and I don't do Catch & Release on that kind of prey, they go straight to the slaughter block!

Insurance companies require

Fri, 2010-03-12 09:47

Insurance companies require you to have a tow hitch lock on with boats apcked out the front of houses.

Touch wood Ive not had anyone take anything from my boat.

Mine sticks out like a sore thumb too, as it stands almost as high as my house on the trailer, an takes up most of the driveway.

Ive had some tossers in the boat once, only way i kenw was because there was empty stubbies and chips everywhere. Luckily they did no damage.
