Boat recommendations 5.5m plate?

 Hi crew

i am looking at upgrading from my quintrex bayhunter4.75 to a bigger boat 2nd hand.  I do most of my fishing around the 40s and still want something I can beach launch.  Really interested in a great riding hull with a good fishing design in mind

the requirements are

size around 5.5m

runabout style plate Ali

preferred 4 stroke

underfloor fuel and kill tank

good deck space with deck wash

no electronics required

price from what I have seen so far 30k should be a good ball park figure

i have looked at a few trail crafts but have heard some negativity about the ride

any comments on trails and other hulls worth looking at

cheers

take them out and try them to test

Have a trailcraft, no isssue with ride...6.4m and beach launch it.

Most of the time its how the skipper drives , trims etc , not the boat .

You can always upgrade to the Coast runner Justin. Mine's 5.4 and still an easy beach launch.

I wouldnt by a trailcraft runabout around 5.5m range mate, they are a crap ride...thats why i sold mine. Friend has a savage pressed hull..and it was a much better ride than mine. Been out on a few trailcraft centre consoles and they ride fine, as your sitting back a bit of course. There is a shitload of good ali hulls around these days, so have a good look around. Westbergs,Coraline ect My 2 bobs worth :) Goodluck!

A good used Westerberg with 2-4 year old outboard is well within your budget.

 I dont mind the trailcrafts

Fri, 2013-03-15 16:41

I dont mind the trailcrafts because they have good deck space from the skippers seat all the way back to the transom. They have the underfloor kill tanks and can easily put in a deckwash if it doesn't have one. May have a shit ride though

Not a trailcraft, not sure how the koolyn runabouts go

westerberg

Fri, 2013-03-15 19:36

I can vouch for the westerberg i have one its 5.7 runabout with clears and soft top and it has a 2006 90 jonno 4 stroke on it

fuel consumption is great and the ride is good but like all allys if you push it too hard the ride can be a bit rough

it has a ton of deck space under floor fuel tank (100lit) kill tank

We fish 40s and some with no trouble  the hull is 5mm

i am going to sell mine but not until the end of April (we have a holiday booked)

and it will be less than 30k you can message me if you need to know any thing

Yes Trailcraft dont have the best ride, but they are a solid honest plate boat at a great price.

The best addition you could make to one (or any plate boat for that matter) is a set of trim tabs. The ride is worst when they lean into the breeze.

I loved my 540 Trailcraft

Fri, 2013-03-15 20:20

I loved my 540 Trailcraft runabout. Tough as nails, ride harsh but trim critical. If trimmed properly, not a bad ride, but into sharp chop, not good. I would make the same choice again if I needed a boat I could tow up north, beach launch etc. Got mine out as far as the Derwent and landed many good fish.

Better to fish off than many 24 ft boats.........tougher than Quintrex, as Quninnies flex and break welds in really rough offshore stuff, but quinnies probably  a slightly better ride in small chop but dont beleieve all the hype, ali is ali, they are all average. For a first boat,  I would always recommend ali.

 I'm curious about weld

Thu, 2013-03-21 20:41

I'm curious about weld breakage on the Quinnies you mention. Have you seen a bit of this. I've put mine through hell and have had no problems with integrity. I'm rebuilding one now and can say the way they are put together is very sound. I used to go to the boat shows and look at the crap welding on some of the local made boats and it used to make me laugh being a boilermaker myself. The Quintrex boats always impressed me with the quality of welding.

Welds

Thu, 2013-03-21 22:46

My quintrex hull is a 95 and all the welds are 100% no sign of any repairs from previous owners.  For a boat of its size it is very sturdy especially through the transom

WA company and based there. I am not sure of any WA delers. Get on to their website.Maybe one in Bunbury.

Very Good boats ,mate has his for 20yrs now and I was looking at them also but got my trailcraft for a really good price so couldnt pass it up..maybe the size/weight lends to smoother ride... Second hand Westys dont usually stay on sale for long if in good nick. They may be displaying at the boat show today at hillarys.

Trailcraft question

Thu, 2013-03-21 20:31

For those of you with trail craft experience or knowledge what size kill tank do they usually have in a 5.5 or 5.3.  I haven't seen one with it fitted yet apart from the esky seat/box.  Would be good to hear from anyone who has fitted an underfloor one

just as this is one feature that I consider fairly important as having a 100l esky on my current boat really shits me with the room it takes up

there seems to be heaps of trailys with mercurys fitted mostly 2 stroke by thr looks any feedback on these

Thu, 2013-03-21 20:42

I had a 580 and I think the kill tank was listed as 150 or 200 litres. Pretty big but unfortunately not insulated and between the seats.

Excellent also for trimming weight into the bow on rough days.

On mine I had to pull up the soft patch over the fuel tank to replace the rivets and there was a ton of space between the fuel tank and kill tank even though fuel was 250 litres. So I sunk a 70 litre Technice esky into the deck and may an insulated ply lid for it that worked a treat.

Ive got some photos somewhere I think.
