Penguin Hulls

Hey guys, I'm looking at buying an old 18ft fibreglass Penguin Half-Cab with a 2004 75Hp Mercury 2 stroke.

Was just wondering if anyone knew if the Penguin hulls are foam-filled?

I used to have an old 18ft Pacemaker that was foam filled, with a 140Hp inboard that gave me troubles, the hull rode beautifully and was extremelly strong and gave a smooth ride. So I'm looking to get another foam-filled fibreglass hull similiar to a pacemaker and was wondering if anyone could give me a bit of feed-back on them?
Thanks, Jack.

Not sure about whats in the hull but an 18 footer with 75hp might be underpowered. Pretty sure the penguin hulls ride well though

I've got a phantom

No sign of foam filling in mine. Rides very well for its size. Same mold as the Haines 16R I'm led to believe. Sometimes wish I had an extra 2 feet of length in a short, quartering chop.

It has an old 80hp merc on it and does 33knots flat out, which is more than fast enough in a boat that size 99% of the time.

I have an Ali penguin sprite

And love it. It's an oldie but built solid. If my boats anything to go by I recon the glass ones would be very good. I've only ever heard of one other Ali penguin owner before I would love to know of anyone else that owns one or had experience with one good or bad.

I have had two penguin glass

Sat, 2013-03-16 13:09

I have had two penguin glass boats. A peguin half cab Phantom which is a 16 footer with an 85 merc two stroke  Went like a bullet (when it ran). I also had a Huntress hull with a 125 Volvo inboard (not enough power).

Neither hull is foam filled but Penguin glass boats are well built. Julius Savaris who was the owner on Penguin used to race his boats and tney were extremely robust and sea kindly.

If you buy a penguin, make sure it is adequately powered as they are quite heavy. I would recommend nothing under 90 hp if its the Huntress

cheers

My old man has a Penguin F500

Thu, 2013-03-21 18:33

My old man has a Penguin F500 which is the phantom hull but was fitted with a small

125 hp Mercruiser sterndrive.

He bought it new back in 1976 and it was the first of it's type built by Julius in his Bayswater factory.

About 5 years ago the mercruiser finally gave up and he was looking it his options.

The hull still looked brand new as the boat was always stored in a shed when not in use.

He shopped around and ended up getting a full width ally transom pod built and fitted a 70hp yamaha

on the back.

Halved his fuel bill, dropped a third of the weight off and goes better than it did with the stern drive.
