Boat seat Storage
Submitted by tiimmbo on Sat, 2009-12-05 09:54
Am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an esky/storage/seat box for our 5.4 westerncraft. We are thinking an esky with rod holders and maybe some storage underneath for tackle or dry storage. Anyone know of anywhere local they may sell something similar.
Cheers

Under seat storage.
My first boat had aluminium tube pedestools, and then I thought the fiberglass box pedestools looked the way to go, my next boat has them, and they really dont seem to be that good after all. They just have junk in them. Yeh I know, but I'd rather have the safety gear more accessable, like in a bag.
My dream project after studing the different stet up's is to have built a stainless tube frame, that bolts to the side of the boat, goes accross and comes down beside the bilge well (which goes the length of the boat). so one for port and one for starboard. And you can still walk up the middle, to the cabin.
The idea being that the seats will bolt to the framel. This will enable my eskys to slide under the seat, out of the way. freeing deck space, but still being readily available when fishing etc.
Back at the jetty the eskys can be removed, easily washed out, or put in the vehicle, to take home.
Fixed seat cool bins must be a pain to keep clean, and you would still need an esky to take your catch home. Like I said I havn't done it yet, its a long term project.

Iana I kind of get what you are saying is there anyway to get a concept sketch off you? Don't want to infringe on your copyright there mate but I like the idea just need to conceptualise it more. http://h.imagehost.org/view/0133/west
Just completed a rough sketch; would the rectangular shapes represent the seats with storage capabilities underneath??

Couldn't open the link.
I think you have the idea, off course the space under the seats would not be limited to just eskys, but any box or rectangular container. Becomes multi purpose. One side the esky the other a box containing life jackets, etc etc.
So (no copy right!) 2 x 25mm tubes from the gunnel (there abouts) about 150mm apart, across, mounting a s/steeel seat swivel. 90" bends, going down and angling outwards like an "A" to add rigiddiddiddity!
Some sort of bar or tube accross the front to stop the goods from sliding forward and an ocky strap at the rear to hold the containers in place.
I have drawn it up on Acadd, and found my eskys are a bees dick too wide. However this is all conceptual. All I know at the moment is I wish I could find a way to get all the crap off the deck, and stowed away.

Ok sweet
I will pm you my e-mail if you could send me that sketch I would be stoked! As Tim mentioned we are in a 5.4m fibreglass westerncraft and are currently looking at ideas to better customise storage options.
What do other guys do for storage? I personally hate sh!t banging around on the way out or in, or even tripping over crap that could be sorted easily. x2 blokes and their fishing gear can easily be sorted with some prior prep but if you invite another 1 or 2 blokes out then it spells disaster not to mention some miffed ego's when you tell em to ditch their tackle but chuck us up the beers.
Will speak to the guys at Commodore cheers Matt, dare say I might be over capitalising with their swish gear!
